First Semester Reflection
When I first arrived to Penn State Berks I believed that my first semester of college would be stressful and difficult as well as not fun compared to high school. To some extend, I was right. Since I have been to summer programs where I experienced the life as a college student, I believed I had the mindset and readiness to survive in college. Although I believe I did ok in my first semester, I knew I could have done better. Because of the procrastination habits I have since highschool, I believe the knowledge and experience I gained through the summer program went to waste. This semester became more difficult and more stressful do to the fact that I procrastinated and also because I wasn’t organized with some of my work. Luckily, I had help …show more content…
One of the people that helped me stay in track of my work was my advisor/professor Aubrey Edwards. Professor Edwards was the program coordinator for the ASPIRE summer program which helped me become familiar with the campus. She was also the professor for my seminar class, which helped me keep in touch with the things going on in campus as well as forcing me to become active while in the campus. For her class we had to go workshops and other activities in order to get credit for the class. Although it was forced it wasn’t so bad. This activities and workshops I went through helped me become aware with the resources we were given as students of Penn State Berks. I learned about the writing and reading center, which helped college students with their assignments. I learned about the proper way to use google docs as well as the proper way to do research. These activities also helped me meet other students which I befriended. Of course I learned many other things from my professors and other faculty.I learned to improve my essay writing skills, the right way to do research and the proper way to do an public speaking

This semester’s CC112 course was quite interesting for me. I thought I wouldn’t do well because of the topic, controversial issues, but it actually tuned out I was wrong. I enjoyed learning and writing about the never ending controversial issues around the world. I’ve witnessed a great amount of improvement in my work since coming into this course. Taking CC112 has helped me better my organization and writing skills by practicing the writing process with each essay, being able to incorporate outside sources into my work using MLA standards of quotation and reference, and being able to write a correct works cited page according to MLA standards. Based on the comments I received from my professor at the beginning of the semester, I needed to work on these very things.…

During the fall semester of 2015, I felt like I was not progressing as well as I knew I could. I fell into the rhythm of waking up and going to class during the week, similar to the daily routines McDonald fell into. On the weekends, I fell into the habit of going to work and then going to sleep without being my natural, productive self. I spoke with a close friend of mine and told her how I was feeling and she gave me valuable advice. She told me to find out what I was passionate about, start narrow and work my way up to my larger goals. I then understood that I am one student in a school of over 10,000 people, but I…

After my first week of the Summer Bridge Program at Penn St-Abington, I learned a lot about the differences between high school and college. I really understand in high school that you must be there during the allotted hours, success rides on the teacher, and that we can get away from not reading the text for class and in college you have more freedom, harder courses, and longer hours of studying. We learned how to become an efficient and effective learner. What I learned from that lesson is that, I have to focus much more and study much harder then what I did in high school. Also that college is no joke since it’s a privilege and that high school is a right that we have to go. To me the most effective strategy I learned is how to become a better listener and how to be a successful student in college. The way I’m going to be a better listener is by using study strategies, note taking strategies and go to a tutoring center if I have trouble. What I learned so far relates to the present is that some strategies I never used or thought about. In the future, I’m going to use tutoring center or use the professor’s office time for any question I don’t understand. In conclusion, I learned so far is going to change the way I look at college. I understand now that college is no place to mess around. It’s a place where you chose what you want to do in the long…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

As a refugee growing up, I did not had much hope of accomplishing anything in life, let alone go to college. I started off strong trying to understand a pattern for my classes and adjustment to my daily schedule like every other student has to do, but I struggled with my studying and time in my day with addition of work. I let myself get too distracted with work as I was worried about financial plans on paying of for school. I let myself be be overloaded in balancing a sleep, study time and personal care. Stress build-up with pressure in my work a attempted to make significant catch-ups in my academic work. These study habits and stress brought me in downfall in my grades. As I was seeing the fall in my grades I grew more worried on now fixing them. As the next semester was in affect I made strides in adjustments to fixing my patterns that kept me from being successful In my classes. With shorter work hours in a week, more hours for studying and additional meeting with my school advisor for academic help, stress and academic struggles still arose for me. I have been seeking a college degree since I left high school in 2002. It has been a long road for me since there were some obstacles and challenges that hindered me from finishing college in a timely manner. When I first entered college I wasn’t really ready, therefore I skipped classes here and there and eventually stopped going all together; a part of me wished that I would have taken a small break after high school before starting college since I barely passed my senior year of school. I was just not ready to start going back to school again, but I did to please my parents, that’s the first and biggest mistake I have made since I first started college.…

I admit, I had a very difficult time last semester, and my grades suffered as a result. I don't mean to make excuses for my poor academic performance, but I would like to explain the circumstances. I knew that registering for 18 credit hours in the spring would require a lot of me, but I needed to earn the hours so that I was on track to graduate on time. I thought I could handle the work load, and I still think I could have, except that my father became very ill in February. While he was home sick and unable to work, I had to drive home every weekend and some week nights to help out with household duties and to care for my little sister. Needless to say, the hour-long drive each way cut into my study time, as did the chores I had to do at home. Even when I was at school, I was very distracted with the home situation and was unable to focus on my schoolwork. I understand now that I should have communicated with my professors (instead of avoiding them), or even taken a leave of absence. I thought I could handle all of these burdens, and I tried my best, but I was wrong.…
