In the movie The Rookie, directed by John Lee Hancock, the director tells a story about a high school baseball coach from Texas named Jimmy Morris. Morris’s dream throughout his life was to make it to the big leagues and play with the very best in the game. He faced multiple challenges that tried to hold him back from his dream. One of the challenges he faced was his dad, his father disapproved of him playing baseball and didn’t support him playing at a young age. Another big challenge was the town Morris’s family moved to, they didn’t care for baseball and there was nowhere to play. In the end, an injury ended his career and he knew it was time to give it up. Eventually, Morris got married and had three children,…

From watching the documentary, The Interrupters, it brought to light the violence going on in Chicago with gang activity. The documentary follows members of the organization CeaseFire, these members go into gang neighborhoods in Chicago to try and stop violence while promoting peace. A vast majority of the members of CeaseFire are people that have grown up in this lifestyle and this culture. While watching the documentary it was very obvious one crime theory stood out as to why this style of life seemed to have a foot hold in Chicago, and the theory was social learning theory. Other criminal theories were harder to find, but two other theories came to light and those were self-control theory and social bonding theory.…

The feeling of connectedness to the world will bring happiness on any journey. In the movie “The Way” Tom gains meaningful companions on his pilgrimage journey. Directors have the important job of communicating the ideas and themes of their films. Their power comes from the choices they make, aside from the script. Directors are artists, they make intentional choices to give the film a specific meaning and help communicate the ideas in it. The Benchwarmers is a great example of intentional choices made by the director. The Benchwarmers is about a group of three young adults, Gus, Clark and Richie. They have been treated like losers all of their lives and after seeing a young kid named Nelson get bullied for playing baseball poorly, they decide to play the team that was bullying him. They found out that they were better than they thought at baseball, so they decide to run and participate (as The Benchwarmers) in a baseball tournament, with the prize being a new stadium. In The Benchwarmers, director, Dennis Dugan uses camera angles, lighting, and establishing shots in order to emphasize conflicts between The Benchwarmers and the other baseball teams.…
“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all.”(Martin Luther King Jr.). Violence and racism are both important motifs in, Do the Right Thing (Lee, 1989). They are prominent in almost every scene of the film and lead to the climax when Radio Raheem is killed by the police. Spike Lee used many different directorial techniques in his movie. Heat and music were an example of this and were prominent throughout the movie. They were clever ways that Lee got across his ideas, they brought the audience into the movie. They helped immerse you in the movie and made you feel as if you were feeling the heat. I had never seen a Lee movie before and was not let down by Do the Right Thing. It was a film that really grabbed your attention and kept your attention because of the strong characters and controversial main ideas. Mookie, The Mayor, and Sal are just a few characters that were important to the central theme of the story. They all represented a different voice of reason when it came to problems in the neighborhood, but one thing remained the same. Violence and racial intolerance are not the answer to problems in black America, the only way to survive as a community is to come together and get educated on the subject.…

In the movie “Bernie”, we follow the story and between a Carthage, Texas funeral director Bernie Tiede, and his co-dependent relationship with a wealthy widow, Marjorie Nugent. As “Bernie” unfolds, we see the companionship turn for the worse as Ms. Nugent’s ill-temper causes Bernie to snap – and lands her dead in her freezer. This movie brings up some questions, specifically regarding image. After analysis, the question I keep coming back to is “Was Bernie genuine and sincere? Or was it all a façade?” Although Bernie committed a horrible crime, I believe the answer to this question is “yes”- Bernie was a genuine man.…
“Finding Forrester,” demonstrates the development of a bond between two individuals who, on the surface appear to be from opposite sides of the world. We have a black sixteen year old born and raised in the Bronx, being raised by a single mother with his whole life yet to be lived. Jamal, the sixteen year old is full of aspiration, energy, spunk, and knowledge he wishes to keep to himself. He keeps this secret for various reasons; his mom Mrs. Wallace reveals one, “he doesn’t want to stand out” (Finding Forester). This is a fascinating film that teaches us how two people who are polar opposites find not only common ground, but a lifelong friendship.…
