ABSTRACT

Social network is a platform for people share their ideals, to meet new friends and to reconnect with old friends. Social networking sites offer people new and varied ways to communicate via the internet, whether through their PC or their mobile phone. Examples include MySpace, Face book, Skype etc. They allow people to easily and simply create their own online page or profile and to construct and display an online network of contacts, often called ‘friends’. Users of these sites can communicate via their profile both with their ‘friends’ and with people outside their list of contacts. With SNS it is easy to communicate with your classmate, discuss class assignment and even submit project to your lecturer, watch videos, make comment on your friend page etc. This study will focus on the effect of SNS on student academic performance. What are student using SNS for, does it affect their studies, or help them to learn easily.

This Thesis will talk about the history of SNS, development and the users of SNS especially by student and lecturers in communicating with colleague and student as well. A twenty (20) question’s personally administered questionnaire was designed and sent to about (100) students from different schools.

CHAPTER I
The Problem and its Background

This chapter presents the introduction, theoretical framework, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of terms that was present in the research paper.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered how the different social network came into existence? Contrary to what might be popular belief facebook or twitter has not always been around I know to some it's an impossible thought however a very true one. In fact the first social networks did not begin springing up until 1997. In spring 1997 a social network site came on the scene known as sixdegrees.com for whatever reason it ran its course and sort of fizzled out. That's when the social networking sites begin popping up. www.friendster.com was born in 2002 followed by www.myspace.com in 2003 and in 2004 www.facebook.com hit the scenes and finally 2006 www.twitter.com launched. Of course these are not the only social networking sites out there. There are hundreds probably by now thousands of others and there are new ones it seems like almost every day. These are the ones though that are the most popular and widely used by millions of people every day. The idea of these social networks is for people to connect with each other it's a wonderful way especially for family that live in other parts of the world.

Uses the Social Network theoretical framework

Backbone to determine:

What variables to measure?

What statistical relationships to look for?

Why networks are being formed via the internet?

Review of Related Literature

This section contains the literature and studies reviewed of relevant topic.
Social Networking A Social Networking Service also social networking site or SNS is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his or her social links, and a variety of additional services. Social network sites are web-based services that allow individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connections, and view and cross the connections within the system. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Social network sites are varied and they incorporate new information and communication tools such as mobile connectivity, photo/video/sharing and blogging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, pictures, posts, activities, events, interests with people in their network.
The main types of social networking services are those that contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with American-based services such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, Tumblr, and Twitter widely used worldwide; Nexopia in Canada; Badoo, Bebo, Vkontakte (Russia), Delphi, Draugiem.lv(Latvia), Hyves (The Netherlands), iWiW Hungary), Nasza-Klasa (Poland), Soup (Austria), Glocals in Switzerland, Skyrock, The Sphere, StudiVZ (Germany), Tagged, Tuenti(mostly in Spain), Myspace, Xanga and XING] in parts of Europe, Hi5 and Orkut in South America and Central America; Mxit in Africa; Cyworld, Mixi, Orkut, Renren,Friendster, Sina Weibo and Wretch in Asia and the Pacific Islands. There have been attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative. A study reveals that India has recorded world's largest growth in terms of Social Media users in 2013. A 2013 survey found that 73% of U.S adults use social networking sites.

Social networking site is the phrase used to describe any Website that enables users to create public profiles within that Website and form relationships with other users of the same Web site who access their profile. Social networking sites can be used to describe community-based Websites, online discussions forums, chat rooms and other social spaces.

2. Social networking is one of the most active web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being declared as the most active users on a number of web-based social network sites such as Friendster, Facebook, and Twitter. The use of social networking website has become so extensive in the Philippines that the country has been tagged as "The Social Networking Capital of the World," and has also become part of Filipino cyber culture. Social networking is also used in the Philippines as a form of election campaign material, as well as tools to aid criminal investigation.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES Social Constructivism, Breadth of Knowledge, Technological Literacy

Social media provides an easily accessible tool for helping students in school, specially the Wikipedia. Supporting the development of this skill for students prepares them for real working experiences. Thus, shallowness was listed as one of negatives of social media, the flipside of that shallowness is the broadness of the knowledge and connectedness that students can experience through social media use. It is now easier for the students to know (or find out) something about almost anything in the world through connected media. All social media relies on advanced information and communication technologies that seamlessly work to build and support technological literacy Social media interconnects individuals on a daily basis. In education, according to the Yuen, p. 210, social media is a “global network of interconnected learning communities where content is created, shared, remixed, repurposed, and exchanged”. This makes it possible for knowledge, intelligence, and skills from all over the world to be combined, allowing for collaboration between both students and school communities. This collaboration through social media provides users with the opportunity to work together in real world situations. Student engagement is one of the primary reasons for social media contributing to students’ success; they are engaged by being committed to their education, taking action within the social media, and by staying connected and interacting with others. Social media opens a whole new door for students as they can participate in enriched discussions, blogs, collaborative chats, and have the ability to share their resources, including files, images, and videos to the students they are interconnected with. This gives students the opportunity to address their own learning styles by the various amounts of tools available, allowing for better understanding of the content Social media in education provides each and every student with equal opportunities, enhancing students’ learning experiences. Because social media eliminates the hierarchical structure you would normally see in a classroom environment, all students are given equal opportunity with engaging in their education. It helps the non-traditional students who are usually commuters or have full or part time jobs receive the same education .It also gives those students who do not feel comfortable talking in class are able to discuss their thoughts and opinions online. Students are given more opportunity to express themselves freely, which increases student to student interaction and student to teacher interaction. Blogs are used more freely, which helps individuals improve their writing skills while also engaging in their education. Both students and teachers are considered winners in relation to social media in education. Teachers are able to connect with their students on a variety of different levels, incorporating students that they may not necessary establish a classroom connection with. Students benefit by having a variety of resources to access information, and being interconnected with peers, alumni, and graduates all over the world.

DISADVANTAGES Despite the positive impacts that social media has had on education, there is always room for improvement. In today’s society, we are faced with the problem of differences between generations X and Y. Generation Y consists of the younger generation, or students, who grew up embracing the web 2.0 technologies with great enthusiasm. On the other hand, Generation X, the older generation which includes several teachers, is forced to adapt to all of these new technologies and often find them overwhelmed and struggling with the changes. This creates a growing gap between teachers and students, limiting the social media that can be incorporated into education, technology in education should be focused on what students use instead of what the school or teachers want, when the students become the stakeholder, it will be geared towards their needs, avoiding the need for collaboration between different generations of educators and students.
As the Generation Y plays the role as the earlier adopters of technologies including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger, older generations have to strive to become part of the social media user population. Teachers are being required to put extra time into learning to manage new technologies, however over 50% of them believe that it can be hard for them to manage. They are recommended to train so that they can utilize these technologies in the classroom, in hopes to create more positive views on these forms of social media. A teachers experience with the technology is beneficial with allowing them to shape their perception on it, as they becoming more confident when using different Web 2.0 applications. However, many teachers fear that they will adapt and become reliant to these technologies for them not able to remain always available to them. The biggest downfall of social media being incorporated into education is the security and privacy issues that come along with it. Confidentiality and privacy are very big issues within social media because of issues such as posting personal information online .Teachers should take responsibility to educate their students about the security and privacy issues of posting person information online. Identities need to be protected, and if this is not followed, social media has the potential to be a huge liability in learning, and risk being taken away from school systems. Social media and Web allows anybody to access the information since it includes a variety of different categories including content sharing, social networking sites, and collaborative productions. Individuals should be aware of the accessibility that everybody has and their privacy settings before engaging in the social media.

IMPORTANCE Social networking has become one of the most important parts of our daily life as it enables us to communicate with a lot of people. Social networking sites are created to assist in online networking. These sites are generally communities created to support a common theme. Since the creation of social networking sites such as MySpace, LinkedIn, and Facebook, individuals are given opportunities to meet new people and friends in their own and also in the other diverse communities across the world. By doing so, individuals can become friends or fans of the profile, and will be updated on current events, specials, and other essential information that the masses would like to share. In earlier days people cannot think about social networking because, in those days science was not so advanced, but due to advancement of technology over the period of time people has become very much accustomed to this particular method of socializing . It is also is a platform where our creations and thoughts are presented to a huge lot of masses. Social networking is very informative, entertaining and it also aware us about various situations or events which are going on in the society or in the world at large. Social networking facilitates us to also enhance our viewpoints as it enables us certain interactive learning activities also. Thus, to summarise social networking sites are the most important and unstringed parts of human lives in the modern times. A lot of criticism has been levelled at social media and the effect it has on the way students process and retain information, as well as how distracting it can be. However, social media offers plenty of opportunities for learning and interactivity, and if you take a moment to think about it, it’s not too hard to see how students benefit from using social media. As younger generations use such technology in the classroom, they remake the educational landscape. Students are experiencing the world through more than just books and assignments; they are learning and adapting to the world using a relatively new form of communication. In a world where connections are important, graduates are coming into the workplace with a lot to offer..
Connections
Social media networks are designed for the purpose of communal connections. Today’s students are accessing Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram to connect and share with those around them. One of the most interesting things about social media is that users can interact and engage with each other solely through a Web presence, perhaps never even meeting in person.
Web engagement Whether they are sharing personal pictures, links to other sites or even commenting on someone’s post, students engage, stretching beyond social interaction purposes alone. Students use social media day in and day out to interact with their peers and even teachers about class-related subjects. In a world where online engagement is important for businesses, these students are becoming experts at developing a sense of Internet presence. Not only do they know how to interact with others on the internet, they know how to use basic and even complex functions in order to do so.

Knowledge Social media users share among themselves day in and day out, giving and receiving information at rapid speeds. This information is more than funny cat videos; they share views and opinions; tips, tricks, and even DIY projects; and, among students, helpful information for classes. Their ability to assess, analyze, retain and share information is skyrocketing and they often don’t even realize they’re developing these skills. Only people born before the Internet was invented are likely to understand the magnitude of this new style of communication.
Social Media Marketing The advent and dominance of social media has created a new breed of marketing, which has required professionals to build and further the field. As social media users join the workforce, they bring their skills to their careers. Social media prepares young workers to become great marketers. It has become essential for major businesses to include a social media marketing strategy and students today are the people filling these positions. While older generations might not completely understand or agree with the amount of social media activity by today’s student population, they will quickly benefit from it. As technology advances, so does the way the world works with it. Members of the young workforce are keeping up to speed with many forms of social media. Once you get a proper social media marketing strategy locked in, you’ll be grateful for the recent graduate you’ve hired to carry out the details.

Social networking is a web-based service that allows individuals to contract a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections within the system (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). Fifteen years ago social networking did not even exist. The first social networking site, SixDegrees.com, launched in 1997 and was the first to combine the buddy lists that AIM and ICQ featured with the ability to create profiles (that major dating sites used). By the year 2000, SixDegrees was out of business as early adopters found there was not much that could be done once friend requests were accepted. Between 1997 and 2001, a number of community tools experimented with various combinations of profiles and public friend lists including AsianAvenue, LiveJournal and LunarStorm (2007). The next wave of social networking came in the early to mid 2000’s with the…
