7 Question Final Project Plan

What religion would you like to consider for your final project? Describe the place of worship you will visit. | The religions that I have considered for my final project is Agnostic and Muslim. I am still conducting research on places of worship for the Agnostic portion of my final project. There are various Muslim Mosques and Temples in the city where I live. I have chosen to visit the United Islamic Mosque in Paterson, NJ. It is located in one of many Islamic communities located around the city near the high school I graduated from. | What do you already know about this topic? | I do not know much about the Agnostic faith except that they do not believe that the existence of God can or can not be proven. My own interpretation of this is Agnostics do believe in a God, they just prefer to take a more scientific approach to their faith. Muslims follow a faith of peace, mercy, and forgiveness and should not be confused with events that have taken place in the past. Whereas Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God, Muslims believe that Jesus Christ was a prophet like Muhammad, Abraham, and Moses. |

| I have spoken with a few Muslims that live within the same community as I do. They all had great things to say about United Islamic Center. I have also done some research online to find a mosque to visit. My future brother-in-law is an agnostic and he has agreed to let me interview him. | What are some sources you could use to gain more knowledge about this religion? | I will be utilizing our schools library and trusted internet sources as well as speaking to the many Islamic leaders in the Community.

In her book The Butterfly Mosque, Willow Wilson aims to convey her own experience of the Muslim culture. Because her family was not religious and she converted to Islam willingly in her adulthood, she is able to present both internal and external sides of this religion. This work is not a propaganda, for Wilson mentions both positive and negative facets of her conversion as she describes her early attempts to harmonize Western and Eastern norms in her personal worldview.…

To begin, we must know why the Muslim center is a problem for many Americans. The mosque does not have much support in the country. In a recent poll, 70 percent of Americans opposed the Muslim center, or as others call it the ground zero mosque (Time.com). Many of those people from the poll have similar feelings and reasons why they do not want the Muslim center built near the World Trade Center. One feeling for not having the Muslim center is that it is an insult to the 9-11 families who lost a loved one in that tragic attack (procon.org). People feel this way because some 9/11 families have stated that they do not support the Muslim center (npr.org) The reason the people feel insulted…

Buddhism is one of the most popular religions in the world. It can be traced back to 563 B.C.E. with the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. He is more commonly known as the Buddha, meaning the “Awakened One”. Buddhism spread quickly throughout Asia and other regions of the world but it remained virtually unknown in the West until the last fifty years. The teachings and practices of Buddhism were spread through three main channels: “Western scholars; the work of philosophers, writers and artists; and the arrival of Asian immigrants who have brought various forms of Buddhism with them to Europe, North America and Australia” (BuddhaNet.net, 2008). My mother, Nguyen Thi Lien Kirk (Lien), and her two close friends, Nhu Lan Nguyen (Lan) and Cuc Pigeon (Cuc), are three examples of immigrants from Vietnam who brought the ideals of Buddhism to the United States following the Vietnam War.…

Jews belief god is a transcendent, immanent and creator. Jewish people firmly belive that god transcends human experience or form. God is to be treated with great deference and respect by the jews. Many jewish people consider the name of god to be too holy to mention except when addressing prayer. The word agnostic comes from the Greek a-gnostos and it means ‘without knowledge’ so an agnostic person does not have enough knowledge to accept weather god exists or not. Agnostics can be divided into two groups. One group is uninterested in god or religion. It does not play a huge role to their daily lives and while they acknowledge the place of religion in society the fundermental beliefs of that religion play have a huge influence on their lives. These people may describe their beliefs as “don’t know , don’t care”. The second group contains people who are actively searching for some meaning outside their own existence. Weather because of expectation of proof or religious experience which has not yet occurred to their satisfaction, these people place themselves in the unconvinced category.…

    A Visit to a Mosque

I have been a member of the Catholic Church my entire life. Although I have often taken time to reflect on my faith, never once have I made an attempt to explore a religion aside from my own. Recently, I stepped outside of my comfort zone and was fortunate enough to visit a mosque. A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam, or one who is Muslim. There are a multitude of services I could have visited to experience a new religion, each with their own identity. The reason I ultimately chose to visit a mosque is because Muslims believe all life begins and ends with God, as do I. However, unlike Catholics, the Islamic religion does not believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God, nor that he was crucified on the cross. My goal was to gain a better understanding of the beliefs Catholics and Muslims share, how they differ, and why. The experience was refreshing, and I feel as though I left the mosque with solid answers to my questions, and a new outlook on my own faith.…

Masjid Ubudiah is Perak's royal mosque, and is situated in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia. Masjid Ubudiah Mosque is the Malaysia's some of most beautiful mosques, the Masjid Ubudiah (or Ubudiah Mosque) has golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight, from near and afar. The mosque was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a government architect .This Masjid was built in 1917 during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul'adzam Shah. It was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days. The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties. Work was interrupted several times, once when two elephants belonging to the sultan's and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles. Its architecture is in the Indo-Saracenic style. Besides that, the Makam Al-Ghufran or a Perak royal mausoleum is located near the mosque. The Ubudiah Mosque was built during the British Occupation of Malaysia, hence, it is known as the colonial mosque, which is architecturally different from the other type of mosque that is not built during the colonial period. The architectural details of the Masjid Ubudiah, Kuala Kangsar are influenced by the Mughal-Gothic architecture or similar with the Moorish architecture. From the features of the onion (bulbous) shape dome to the Minaret design, all are inspired and influenced by the Mughal-Gothic architecture. But there are some differences between the Mughal-Gothic and the Moorish architecture. For Mughal-Gothic architecture, the style are much into having ornamental applied in the style and design; as for the Moorish Architecture, they had slightly different in using the…
