Since 1974, SPAN’S mission is to provide outstanding services to aging citizens, people with disabilities, services that enable them to live as fully and independently as possible. Because of the Retirement Research Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for our nation’s elders & as one of the nation’s first private foundations devoted exclusively to aging and retirement issues, we sincerely hope that you will choose to join us as our partner by investing in the health and well-being of our seniors. Executive Director, SPAN INC.
SPAN is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1974 to provide services to senior citizens in Denton County. Our mission is to help seniors improve and maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle and to maximize their quality of life. The SPAN new program for dental health assistance will provide comprehensive access to dental health to the seniors that SPAN currently serves as well as people with disabilities in Denton County. Many seniors are on fixed incomes that prevents them from being able to invest on dental care and/or treatment. Access is particularly important as low-income, minority, and institutionalized/homebound elderly are at high risk for oral disease but are the least likely to receive services. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that only 15% of these elderly had satisfactory oral health.1 The main goals of the senior dental assistance program is first to identify low-income seniors with unmet oral health needs, particularly those who are already in care but need further treatment. With your help, the unaddressed gap in oral healthcare for seniors represents an opportunity to improve over-all wellbeing. A program such as this one can make significant improvements in the health of serious who have serious, chronic health conditions that are exacerbated by untreated dental issues. Your investment of $221,760 will complete the funding we need to fully implement this program, and we are excited about the prospect of partnering with you. Thank you for your consideration of our request.
