Filter Dirty Water Experiment
First thing is to make your hypothesis on how to filter dirty water like mine “My hypothesis is if I use one cut bottle and layer it to be pebbles, sand, cloth, charcoal, then cloth, sand, and pebbles it filter the water will be cleaned.”. Then you start to build hypothesis, so start by getting a bottle, cut the bottom of the bottle like two inches of it. You take the cap off the bottle then get two coffee filter and use two rubber bands to tie it to the cap of the bottom. Then add about a inch of pebbles of to the bottle, and then about a half inch layer of sand, a layer of cheesecloth. Next is a layer of charcoal, layer of cheesecloth, then a half layer of sand, finally a layer one inch pebbles. Your hypothesis is made, but it is not time …show more content…
Grab a 40 mL beaker and fill the normal water in the beaker to 40 mL and grab a pH tape then put it into the water. Take the pH paper out of the water and match it to the best similar color and record the data, the pH of normal water is 7. Next is to test the conductivity of the water, grab the conductivity probe by putting into the water and hit the green arrow. Let the probe be in the water for 30 seconds, so when it is at 30 seconds hit the red square to stop it and record the data. The conductivity of normal water is 503, the next step is testing the turbidity of the water. To test the turbidity you would use the colorimeter by pouring the water into a the clear square container and close it, it should have like 3/4s of the container of the water. And you would record the data that the labquest says, the turbidity of normal water is 0. You would do those same steps for the dirty water before the filter and record the data, the data shows the pH to be 5, the conductivity to be 4280, and the turbidity to be .70. Finally you will be able to start your filter, grab the beaker with the dirty water and put it through your filter. After that you want to do those some steps to the water that comes through your filter and record the data, the pH is 7, the conductivity of the water is 1,223.3, and the turbidity is .024. The result changed the pH back to normal water, but not the

Water is one of the many things that all human being need in order to survive. Considering the vast amount of water that is on the planet, it is reasonable to believe that there is more than enough water for everyone to have their fair share and more. Yet this sadly is not the case, as the majority of the water on Earth is unsuitable to drink due to the fact that it is tainted with a numerous amount of contaminants, such as bacteria and salt. The amount of safe drinking water is decreasing more and more each year and will soon become one of the more scarce resources on the planet. Over the years, many different people all over the world have tried to create and refine a water purification process that is both effective and efficient. The…

    1. Pumping and containment – The majority of water must be pumped from its source or directed into pipes or holding tanks. To avoid adding contaminants to the water, this physical infrastructure must be made from appropriate materials and constructed so that accidental contamination does not occur. 2. Screening (see also screen filter) – The first step in purifying surface water is to remove large debris such as sticks, leaves, trash and other large particles which may interfere with subsequent purification steps. Most deep groundwater does not need screening before other purification steps. 3. Storage – Water from rivers may also be stored in bankside reservoirs for periods between a few days and many months to allow natural biological purification to take place. This is especially important if treatment is by slow sand filters. Storage reservoirs also provide a buffer against short periods of drought or to allow water supply to be maintained during transitory pollution incidents in the source river. 4. Pre-conditioning – Water rich in hardness salts is treated with soda-ash (sodium carbonate) to precipitate calcium carbonate out utilising the common-ion effect. 5. Pre-chlorination – In many plants the incoming water was chlorinated to minimise the growth of fouling organisms on the pipe-work and tanks. Because of the potential adverse quality effects (see chlorine below), this has largely been discontinued.[citation needed] [edit]pH adjustment…

[pic]"Activated" carbon filter media is produced by super-heating dried coconut husks in a low oxygen environment, using a process called pyrolysis. The resulting "biochar" husk, is a purified form of carbon, containinglarge amounts of cellular sized surface area, negatively charged to attract positively charged toxins. Toxins in the water become attached to the husk's carbon surfaces.Over time, the attractive charge of carbon surfaces are neutralized, making it time to change the filter.…

In the mechanical methods of home water filtration, which comprised of about 16 million people, half of the people used candle filters as they considered it cheap and easy to use(price ranging for Rs.350-1100), whereas the rest of them used water purifiers (price ranging from 2000-7000). Unlike Candle filters, which were ineffective in removing bacteria and viruses water purifiers employed a three step process to water filtration which filtered water much more effectively as compared to candle filters.…

In our search for prosperity, growth and success, we are destroying the system that we as human are completely dependent upon. Population growth, water-intensive agriculture and economic development are using water faster than it can be replenished. Our Earth is a place where beauty exists, a place where 6.6 billion people and 15 million other species live, a place filled with 1.4 cubic kilometers of water. Although 70% of the planet’s surface is blanketed with deep oceans water, freshwater only form less than 3% of the total water and the rest are saltwater. Besides that, only 30% of the freshwater are not being lock up in ice cups and glaciers. Another 20% are in certain areas that are too remote for human to access and the remaining 80% comes from the monsoon or floods. That leaves us with less than 1% of usable water from lakes, rivers and underground sources. Nevertheless, Science has helped mankind to solve this problem and one of the current approaches being explored in many countries, including South Africa is nanotechnology.…
