Film Techniques Used To Show A Dystopian Society
The movie version of the hunger games tries to show a dystopian society in various ways, for example, costumes, Setting, Props, Lighting, makeup, the location where the movie was filmed and more.

The directors used different styles of costumes to show a dystopian society. They played with colours of the costumes to express the character's life. The cast who played the role of citizens living in district 12, were dressed in different shades of the colour gray, to show the audience that the districts don't have money and their life is miserable.

The scene in the capitol is seen there are a lot of colours in the costumes of the cast who played the role of citizens in the capital. Their costumes are very bright and colourful, even the surroundings seem bright wherein the district 12 the weather seems gloomy and dull. The costumes are very fancy to show that the people in the capital have money to buy such kind of clothes. Bright

The tributes wear all black costumes and a jacket. I think the costume designer dressed the tributes in all black so that the viewers will not be able to see the blood and things like that since they are fighting and there will be blood. I personally didn't like the costumes the tributes wore. The costumes the tributes were wearing didn't look like they are going to fight. I think they should have worn a black leather bodysuit and black boots with a belt to keep weapons.

The customer designer of The hunger games could have made the costumes much better especially, the dress Katniss wears in the interview. The dress Katniss wore in the interview was boring and too simple. There was nothing special about the dress the flames looked fake. I think they should use shiny or sparkly fabrics. They could have mixed two different colours to make it look more eye-catching. If the costume designer had used red and orange colours to make Katniss Everdeen’s dress it would look like fire because fire is not one

Color is one of the important elements to design costumes. Color does not only reflect the emotion, feeling, and mood, but it also is symbolic of social status. The porters have two kinds of suit uniform, which are white and blue navy. Each color represents different duties. Sister Juba’s dresses are very bright and colorful such as red, green, bright grey, orange, etc. From dresses’ color, we can tell that she has a lot of emotions during the play. Meanwhile the band attires are colorful but the colors are much somber than those of the Sister Juba. Lutie Duggernut, the homeless girl, wears a very gloomy brown and white. In these cases, the color does not reflect the mood of the character. Thus, the gloomy colors tell us about the social stratum. The duller the color, the lower the social stratum because dull color can make the fabrics look fairly old.…

The mask simulates a face of a person using orange cut out eye holes, and orange eyes and mouth. Around the face is many little beads sewed to the black cloth to symbolize wealth during this time period because these beads were hard to get at this time. The part of the costume that grabs the viewer’s attention the most is the large circular ears that stick out from the mask. The ears are not proportional to the body which gives the piece animal like characteristics. A brown tunic hangs from the shoulders of the costume all the way to the feet.…

The characters throughout this sequence are only wearing red, black or white. Here the red could be perceived as to portray the character as ‘dangerous’ or to convey their sex appeal, which allows the audience to already have an idea about the character and forces them to make a decision on their opinion of the character before the episode has even started. Props have also been used for this same reason. An example would be one of the characters holding a hand-held mirror to depict that she is a vain character or a male character who is punching a punch-bag whilst wearing a tank top, conveying the underlying violence beneath his calm and collected exterior.…

When I first saw the play I payed no attention to the costumes but enjoy the overall play, which mean that costume designers did a good job. According to professor Landis, she says that costumes should not be the main focus but improve the overall environment of the play. Once I look back to picture of the play, I start noticing costumes. I find it beautiful how all the characters wore emerald, lively clothing to add to the wonder of Emerald City. I also notice that Elphaba has the famous wiked witch hat but the costume designer made modification that make it appear like the orignial hat, but it looks more suiting to a beautiful younge women. This production used a lot of change of set design as well as the use of expensive effects. For instant, during the scene were there is flying monkeys, the audience not only see a million monkeys appearing as if they are going to take flight but the huge dragon on top of the stage comes alive. During this scene the light technicitan uses red lights on the stage and the background is Elsabub castle. The use of red lights, loud sounds, and the…

The producers used a little bit darker lighting, which mad the background appear to be darker when the Lion was picking on the Tin Man and Scarecrow. The light casts shadows off of the characters, especially Toto. I feel that it helps the viewer relate to the menace the Lion is trying to portray. According to Geneseo Edu (n.d), “costumes give information on the tone, style, time and place of a play. Dresses with an…

From the sound, lighting, camera placement etc. One example of this is the lighting throughout the film, you can see it is very bland, very black and white, to reflect Harold’s lifestyle. Another use of lighting in the film is when the light on his wrist is flared are brightened to show the significance of the watch to him and the story. Many of the shots in the movie are simple and still, especially towards Harold to show the simplicity of his life. The colors in the film also have a big reflection on the character’s attitude and emotions. For example the color’s in Harold’s house and work are very dull and stale to reflect his emotions and his basic personality. Another example is the bakery, which is much more colorful to show the baker’s aggressive personality. Another example is the colors in Dale’s home, they are very bright and energetic to show that the changing character and emotion of Harold. Music also shows the setting of the characters, with the music throughout…

Schoolhouse Rock Live was a delightful play performed by the TCC Theatre group. This play was about a school teacher getting ready to go to the first day of school when he is visited by figments of his imagination to remind him learning should be entertaining. This musical featured music from the classic Schoolhouse Rock videos, people used to watch in elementary and middle school. Though this musical had numerous lessons, the most important message was that learning new things should always be fun.…

The costume design of the play is pretty interesting. Costumes indicated the timeline and places that the story was taking place (Wilson and Goldfarb 173). Actors who dressed normally lived in the real world, and those who wore game costumes lived in the virtual world. The costume design also indicates the characterization. For instance, Agnes in normal clothes showed that she was a student and lived a normal life. Tilly who is Agnes 's sister, wore a black and tight costume with a sword. This showed that Tilly liked the passionate life. The accessories and weapons indicated which of the two spaces the actors were in. The make-up of some actors who lived in the virtual world was exaggerated and little scary. The hairstyles of the actors were also creative and varied.…

How does the director use various techniques to contrast the control of the Comte and the effect of Vianne’s influence on the town? Individuality versus conformity is a fine line that people in society walk along. This has been shown in Chocolat, released in 2000 and directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Where Vianne and her chocolate shop represent individuality and the Comte represents conformity. Hallstrom uses various film and dramatic techniques to convey this idea to the audience.…

Another reason The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel is people are always being under surveillance. According to Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta’s supervisor, “ You really want to know how to stay alive? You get people to like you.” Haymitch is saying that to increase your chance of survival you have to be liked by the people watching you, like the sponsors at the Capitol and the cameras at the games, as this event is an annual event that is televised…

The first shot wherein Mila, the mother in the film Rainier and Bingbong was making, was dark. I think it symbolized the hardships Mila was encountering. It also showed that most of the houses in a slums area do not have electricity. In terms of costume, I really like what Mila was wearing. Just a loose, faded, blue t-shirt and a pair of leggings; her hair was messy; I think the wardrobe did a good job in this. As this is something close to reality and you could expect a mother from the class D or E wearing such outfit in a normal morning in her abode. I think that the hair also suited the mood Mila was in that scene- disorganized and problematic.…
