The differences between the Greek culture and American cultures. The movie illustrated culture clash between both cultures differences. In the movie apparently the Greek family only have close relationship with their own people, Greek’s people, and they see non-Greek’ people like outsiders or only for business purposes. For example, when Ian’s parent went to the engagement party to Toula’s house, and Ian’s mom brought a pound cake for the dinner, Toula’s mother did not know what type of cake it was until Ian’s mom explain her after repetitive times. Also, during the party, Ian’s parents seems dry and boring about the party, dance, Greek food and drinks because they are not accustomed to that on the contrary Toula’s family are having fun and…
My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is a 2002 film, that portrays the main character, Toula Portokalos and the conflict that occurs after she decides to marry someone outside of her culture. In the film, Toula is the middle child of an immigrant family that proudly represents their Greek Heritage. The most prominent cultural belief is that Toula must marry a Grecian man. With the assistance of her mother and her aunt, Toula is able to attend college and work for her aunt’s travel agency, despite her father’s original disapproval.…
For 20 years, I sought only this day. Nothing else existed... until I saw you. Then everything changed. I fell in love with you Evey. And to think I no longer believed I could.“ This quote shows us that V has finally regained the ability to love, which is something he thought has long been lost. This is due to his frightening and struggle filled love which he thought had rid him of all emotion but hate. This change shows us that the relationship between Evey and V has allowed V to regain the emotion of love which also means he has regained his humanity and no longer lives only for hate and revenge. I believe the director used these film techniques on purpose to show to the viewers that the relationship between Evey and V has drastically changed both of their personalities and has influenced many of their actions during their time together. This teaches us that it is in our human nature to trust someone who has been with you through everything and it is also in our nature to want to spend our last moments with the people that we love. This act of human nature is seen through both our main characters, V and…
The film also portrays the stereotypes that were used against the group of Asian American friends. At a party, a couple of white varsity sports players made racist jokes against them, but that caused Daric, one of the main characters, to fight them and the Asian American group ended up beating one of the white varsity players. After that, people at the high school started treating them with more respect. Another interesting aspect about the movie was that there were no parents. I felt that this brought all of the attention towards the struggles that the high school students felt, without being repressed by the perspective of the parents. I enjoyed this film very much. I thought it was very funny and was also very accurate on portraying the stereotypes that Asian American high schoolers had to go through.…
In other words, she sees the looks teachers give her, and it inspires her to do better in her school work and prove to them that her image does not define her personality. Her mother tries to get her to act like the rich kid she is, but the more her mother tries, the more she rejects the idea and rebels. She wears black and dyes her hair unnatural colors to hide where she really comes from, a rich family. She also hides her love for playing piano because she does not want to be classified as a rich kid, but doing so gets classified as a punk or a goth. Antonia, the other main character, is classified as smart or a teacher’s pet, so a teacher’s pet and a punk; that is not usually the types that are best friends. In the beginning of the book, they did not even want to be seen together. By the end of the book , that did not matter anymore because they were proud of each…
She is the outcast of this movie because she has been alone her whole life. She has wanted adventure and never had parents or a friend to talk to and to be around. She is basically banished from the town and the only reason is she welcomed is because of the labor she has to do for the people in town.…
Her views change as the play progresses. When she hears what her father has done to Eva, she says 'but these girls aren't cheap labour - they're people' (p19)…
In the movie Muriel’s Wedding, there are many things that had repetition throughout the movie which gave symbolization of what it meant to the characters identity and events that occurred within the movie.…
Emotionally- She found she was getting moody and angry quickly because she was tired and stressed and it seemed no one could understand how she felt. This whole situation affected her confidence; she thought she was ‘strange’ because she couldn’t go to school like a ‘normal’ person.…
* A great deal of humour comes in the play in the form of insults towards the directors. For example when Lewis defensively asserts Justin that “I am not a ward, I am director”. This creates a sense of humour because the educated audience would think that there is no…
When you come from a different culture, especially when you are so attached to that culture, like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, it becomes very difficult to have to go against your usual cultural ways. Trying to please your parents and yourself can even become a challenge, when the two of you want alternative things, and have such contrasting point of views. When it comes to flowing in with mainstream society while being raised a certain way, life becomes a lot more complicated.…

All of the qoutations pretty much tells the same message. But for me Rabbi Barry H Block's qoutation most strongly captures the essense of the film. As i read the qoutation ''hope and laughter can bring light into even the darkest corner'' affect me,it is because our country is in the list of poorest countries in the world. We need to work everyday under the sun just to buy food for our families. One thing that i am proud of being filipino is you can't really tell if we have a problem because we are always smiling. One thing that makes every filipino happy is a karaoke machine, there is no family who doesn't have one. I remember when I was still in the Philippines we sing for forever until we get the 100% score and we even sing until dawn. Thats why were proud of Jessica Sanchez 2nd runner up of American Idol because she get to show other people what filipinos got.Even if people don't have any food or money in there we have our neighbours who shares what they have, that is love and were still smile and laugh even though deep inside were not. I focused more on the word ''laughter'' because it is really the best medicine. This response is more on emotional that intelectual because i experienced it before.…
