How often do you see teenagers reading a book for pleasure these days? Sadly, this is a dying art. It is essential to encourage today’s adolescents to read. When a book is made into a movie, people often argue that the written version is no longer necessary. Although the movie version is fun to watch, reading the actual novel is much more stimulating. Such is the case with Suzanne Collin’s novel, The Hunger Games. This novel is about the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts, a world where teenagers have to kill each other. Think of this as an obligation and the only way to survive. There is suspense, action, and tragedy…

Since this is a unit that is focused around The Hunger Games, the reading portion of the lessons is rather obvious, as students need to read and comprehend the book to be successful. They are also asked to read various articles and interpret texts in order to respond thoughtfully and appropriately to discussion and writing topics. Since the reading aspect of language was covered, I tried to focus on the importance of incorporating the remaining three language skills – writing, speaking and listening – while creating this unit. I did this by paying special attention to ensuring that discussion and dialogue were abundant to allow students the opportunity to not only share their own ideas but also…

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins had me interested because it deals with a sixteen year-old girl that goes through a drastic change after some events that happen in her life. The Hunger Games is about a girl, Katniss, that volunteers to take the place of her 12 year-old sister, Prim, in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a televised event in which a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the 12 districts of Panem, is randomly chosen each year to fight to the death against the other 23 participants, or more commonly known as “tributes.” The tributes are enclosed in a large, dangerous arena that is controlled by the “Capitol.” They must fight to the death and find a way to survive and be the last one alive, to win what are known as “The Hunger Games.” Katniss promises she would win for her sister. In the end, not only does she win, but her fellow tribute Peeta Mellark which comes from the same district as her, wins as well. They manage this by acting like “lovers,” throughout the entire event, so that the audience feels sorry for them. I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I have ever read. It gives the genre Fantasy Fiction/Sci-Fi a whole different aspect. I personally do not like that genre, but when I read this one it made me realize that I shouldn’t judge the entire genre just because of one book that I had read in the past. However, since there aren’t many books based on dystopias it makes it interesting to read about a little something less common in literature. All in all, this is one great piece.…

    1. Reality competitive shows and survival shows are still part of almost every channel’s line-up of shows to this day. These shows feature competitors such as models, singers, dancers, fashion designers, and even chefs. Airing these shows is a win-win situation, because they aren’t only entertaining, but they are cheap to produce as well. There are no high talent fees or scripts to write, just the perfect assortment of characters thrown in, challenges for them to accomplish and a grand prize to await the winner. The viewers in turn get hooked because they are presented with potential heroes to root for, to hate and/or to sympathize with. The fact that it is a “reality” show naturally gives it that element of genuineness and also of surprise. They somehow live vicariously through the competitors. On the other hand, they are also interested in the way they suffer.…
