How They Forecast a Cold Winter

One day in early September the chief of a Native American tribe was asked by his tribal elders if the winter of 2009/10 was going to be cold or mild. The chief asked his medicine man, but he too had lost touch with the reading signs from the natural world around the Great Lakes.

In truth, neither of them had idea about how to predict the coming winter. However, the chief decided to take a modern approach, and the chief rang the National Weather Service in Gaylord Michigan.[pic]

'Yes, it is going to be a cold winter,' the meteorological officer told the chief. Consequently, he went back to his tribe and told the men to collect plenty of firewood.

Two Brothers with Farms Quarrel

Filed Under Short Funny Stories | 5 Comments Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of

It was an oddly quiet Sunday morning in the middle of December. Clear skies, forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains dominated the views from my front porch. The temperature was mild, one of those days you could wear a thin sweater and be a little chilly. There were no birds chirping or butterflies fluttering, as they had all left to the south to find a more suitable environment for them or died. I had missed this type of day when you could relax in the peacefulness of the quiet morning…

On January 12, 1888, the weather in the west was mild, compared to previous weeks. Little did the people know that a massive cold front was in route and would be catastrophic to the people, their livestock, and the economy in the dekota and nebraska praries. The cold front would cause one of the worst blizzards for the region, killing close to 500 people. The factors that made the death toll so high involve the mild weather before the storm, the lack of technology for warning systems, and bad timing.…

My fondest memories of childhood involved my family’s cabin located just north of Bergland, Michigan. It was constructed in the 1950s off of M-64 beside the Sleepy Creek and has been used as a get-a-way from the daily grind of life ever since. The surrounding area is largely National Forest and state land which becomes a deer hunter’s church in November and a snowmobiler’s paradise during the snowy winters. While there have been changes over the years, climate change threatens our experience at this small A-Frame in the woods.…

In the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and didn’t care about what the weather was like, even when the old timer told him that when it’s fifty below, travel with a partner. “The mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all -- made no impression on the man”(1). During the middle of the story, he found himself getting frustrated. “He had never experienced such cold, walking he rubbed his cheek-bones and nose, and the following instant the end of his nose went numb”(3). Soon he started to realize that he should’ve listened to the old timer. Towards the end, when he finally grasped that he was going to freeze to death, he was first fearful of dying, but then panic started to set in. Which made him run around in a frenzy to keep his warmth. But after a while, he comprehended that, that wasn’t going to help, so he calmed himself. “He was bound to freeze anyway, and he might as well take it decently. With his new found peace if mind came the first of drowsiness. A good idea, he thought, to sleep off to…

Winter is coming. This week the temperatures plummeted from mid-nineties to the upper sixties in a flash. Every morning I leave for school around 6:30AM, this morning it was forty seven and - I was bundled up like a burrito. I suppose I can’t be satisfied because I always comment about the heat and now that it is cold, I am still complaining. When moving from a colder climate to a warmer climate it takes a little time, clearly, for your blood to thin. 2012 brought on the move from mostly cold and humid Pennsylvania to the dry inferno that is Arizona. I had not an inkling that I would ever think the sixties were cold. Here are my six realizations since I have acclimatized:…
