Field Study Proposal

The proposal for my final project is to do a field study on a Navy Federal Credit Union branch located in the Hampton Roads area at 7979 Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23511. Navy Federal Credit Union is a company in the financial services industry and its headquarters is based in Vienna, VA. This particular branch is a service providing business that employs 23 employees, two of which are managers and two are supervisors. Their services incubuses a wide range of financial amenities to include money transactions, all types of loans, insurance, investments, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA’s), and the simple savings and checking accounts for your day to day living.
Just like any other credit unions they provide a service which is limited to individuals that can become a member. To become a member you have to be either in the military, Department of Defense (DOD) employee, or a family member of one. A member of a credit union also becomes a partial owner in which they can vote and elected their president and board of directors. Navy Federal Credit Union’s Headquarter has developed guidelines for their employees so there is an equal and set standard among their branches. For example there is a Navy Federal Code of Ethics which governs the way all management and employees conduct themselves in day to day operations.
For my field study I will narrow my discussion down to group maintenance which discusses the behavior of groups and leader-member exchange. I will do this by interviewing both the branch manager as well as one employee. This will allow me to develop both outlooks on the situation and compare and contrast. Does leader behavior have a direct impact on success of its employees and overall business?
Interviewees:
1. Mary Mattice: Branch manger
2. Sarah Leverett: Member service representative
Upon initial observation Navy Federal Credit Union seems like a well-oiled

The Trait Approach assumes that some people are natural leaders and examines motives, values, personality, and skills. The Behavior Approach branches into two sections. One method to the Behavior Approach is to look at leader behavior. What does the leader actually do? The other portion of the Behavior approach is to determine what actions are helpful and what actions are less helpful for leaders. The Power-Influence Approach looks at leadership from the perspective of power. This approach asks the questions like, “What type of power does the leader have in regards to the followers?” This approach looks at the amount and type of influence the leader has on the people around him or her. The situational approach looks at the situation leader must deal with. This approach examines the mission of the unit, the type of organization the leader is a part of, and the nature of the work environment. The Integrative Approach involves multiple types of approaches. Participative Approach involves both the behavior and the power-influence approach. Participate leadership involves the group in decision-making and creates a sense of project ownership by the group. Members who feel empowered are more committed to mission accomplishment. For these reasons, the Participative Approach is the desired…

In many organizations leadership is the key to a company success, and many companies find out the hard way that managers do not always demonstrate the abilities to be leaders. Managers who do not demonstrate these abilities are individuals, who have been given a hierarchy position, follow the “corporate code” and do not think outside the box. Also, “managers with the best intentions in the world often flub opportunities to get invaluable feedback from subordinates. Managers may send unintentional messages that they’re too busy to be bothered, not respond to subtle hints, or simply fail to schedule regular feedback opportunities” (Ashford University edition, 2007, p.30). Many managers fail to realize that to be a great leader you must have followers; your followers believe in you, and they want to succeed. In my years of being a manager I have worked for leaders that think they have all the answers and do not need the help of the people that work under them. I have seen that this may work for a little while but in the long run it tends to back fire on them and the company as a whole. This leads to what I feel a leader is and how the qualities of an effective leader are spread out through organizations.…

Before discussing leadership styles and their affects on group communications of a specific company, it is important to first identify the organizational structure of that company. Different organizational structures may lend themselves more toward specific leadership styles then others. “A company’s individual organizational structure is a formal composition of task reporting relationships that allows the company to control, coordinate, and motivate employees so a common goal can be achieved” (George & Jones, 2005, p. 505). Coordinate in this context refers to the communication efforts made between upper management, middle management, site management, and line employees.…

Successful and effective leadership "depends in part on how well a manager resolves role conflicts, copes with demands, recognizes opportunities, and overcomes constraints" (Yukl, 2006, p. 13) but "the main aim of leadership behavior, however, is to influence organizational members ' actions because it is through the behavior of the members that organizations ' goals are attained" (Kanungo,…
