Field Observation Paper
My first observation was with Jocelyn Chan from 11:00-12:00. I observed in room A138 while the therapy session took place in A134. The clinician was working with Q.Q. on adult fluency. The client was an international student. At times, it was often hard to understand him, but his stuttering was evident. The clinician started with friendly conversation. Q.Q. used silent blocks when he had an episode of stuttering, these silent pauses were often in the middle of a conversation. His speech also included repetitions of the sound of words. I also observed him experience secondary stuttering behaviors by rapidly blinking his eyes. I concluded that Q.Q. had experienced overt stuttering. During the session, various methods were used. The first method observed involved a direct stuttering deduction technique. The clinician would ask questions and before he would answer or come upon a stutter, he would have to wait three seconds. I noticed that when the client utilized the pause-and-talk technique, his communication went smoothly. The clinician did a wonderful job on using materials that gained the interest of Q.Q. She brought information on his horoscope in hope that he could related it to his culture of the Chinese calendar. He made connections to the horoscopes by explaining his symbol on the …show more content…
Before the session started, the clinician informed me that she was taking a more “low key approach” for today. In the previous therapy session, she had Q.Q. called Jimmy John’s to order a sandwich. She was hoping he could use some of his vocal exercises to deplete his stuttering during the phone call. However, it was unsuccessful. The employee hung up on him before Q.Q. could place his order. Therefore, she had an observer converse with the client during the last ten minutes of the session. The client used the three second rule to speak to the guest, and his conversation was

He wore a grey button up shirt, showed tenseness in his shoulders, and leaned slightly forward when conversing with the cashier. His expression exhibited confusion about the menu and had difficulty remaining focused on the cashier or picking a desired meal, while blinking continuously. The tone of his voice was low and gravelly. K held a slow rate of speech during the conversation. He had trouble with the continuity of speech and paused for long periods of time. The content of his speech answered the cashier’s questions but were short answers. Curiosity and confusion were the two predominant feelings during this conversation, followed by minor distractions…

Language is a unique form of communication system used all around the world, in many different cultures and variations. In the short stories, On Stuttering, by Edward Hoagland, and Me Talk Pretty by David Sedaris, the authors discuss how they had to overcome obstacles in their everyday lives because of their speech impediments. They describe how they felt about their limitations, different strategies they used to defeat their language barriers, and the affects that theses obstacles had on their self confidence. Hoagland struggles with a stuttering problem, while Sedaris has moved to France in hopes to become fluent in a new language; although their handicaps were different, they used many of the same approaches to master them.…

Ida E. Whitten was born on a small farm in Kansas and lived with her parents and a younger brother. Throughout her early years she noticed that she stuttered, but it was not a big deal. When she finally went to school and was around other students her stuttering became more noticeable. When Ida entered high school the anxiety and tension of her stutter became worse and lead her to develop feeling of humiliation and subordination, and feeling of insecurity. Her stuttering was so severe in high school that she went through school without doing any oral recitations. After school Ida knew that she was going to be a teacher. She was worried that her stuttering was going to stop her from teaching. When she graduated she was able to find a local teaching job at a small school. For the next few years Ida moved to different rural schools in Kansas. Ida began to realize that she needed to do something about her stuttering if she wanted to continue to teach. Ida decided that she was going to find professional help. Ida enrolled in the University of Iowa and registered for psychology and speech…

In group 2A there was a five year old girl by the name Norma Pugh. In the second session with Tudor, it was clear that she did not want to talk. Another child that was nine years old named Betty Romp actually refused to talk in general. These two kids were in the group that were fluent speaking but told that they were going to become stutterers if they did not fix these issues immediately. The kids in this group were afraid that if they were talking that they were going to start stuttering. They eventually started to struggle saying certain words. This proved to Tudor and Johnson that stuttering is actually something that can affect anyone if they are giving a certain type of reinforcement. Johnson started this experiment to prove that if a child is labeled as a stutterer, they could become a stutterer. This is was proven true because five of the six orphans in the group of fluent speakers that were given negative reinforcement, became…

Communication provides a means for people to connect to each other and provides a bridge so that we can share information, signals, or messages between us (Giger, 2013). In the healthcare setting it is imperative that the communication between patient and provider be exchanged quickly, accurately and effectivity. One of the most demanding situations for members of a linguistic team is assisting the conversation between the healthcare professional and the patient (Issacs, Laurier, Turner, & Segalowitz, 2011).…

The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…

Often referred to by many as stammering, the Stuttering Foundation defined stuttering as a “communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations (lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds and syllables.”It is believed that about one percent in every general population stutters, being more common in males than females. With the precise cause of stuttering unknown and the combination of factors such as genetics, development (child), family dynamics and now incites from neurophysiology, greatly subscribes why stuttering is different for everyone as it continues or worsen.…

Treatment of a speech disorder can be provided to all ages and they come in many variations, for example; some may be born with a disorder and others may have acquired it over time because of a trauma or a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The diagnosis of a speech problem begins with the evaluation of the person and is then narrowed down to a speech problem such as, articulation, fluency or stutter, and voice disorders. In addition, they evaluate whether there is a language problem such as slowed or delayed speech, aphasia, dysphasia which is a difficulty swallowing and other related disorders. Other disorders can include someone having a cleft plate or cleft lip, deaf people, expressive and/or language comprehension, autism, and also when someone just wants to learn to communicate or speak clearer. With so many different etiologies for speech disorders, a growing number of case studies and research programs in the field of communications and speech therapy have emerged to help those with any such disorder. One area of concern is whether there is any correlation between children having a speech disorder and when they begin therapy after being diagnosed. There are children that are born with a Speech Sound Disorder (SSD), which is when a child’s speech sounds are not produced correctly, not produced at all or used incorrectly also including problems with articulation (making sounds) and phonological processes (sound patterns)(American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). Children who have been diagnosed with SSD, 27% have shown to also have a propensity to have some type of literacy disorder as well (Lewis et al., 2015). Researchers have begun to look into the correlation between the child being diagnosed compared to when they began therapy immediately after being diagnosed…

She had undergone medical treatment with a specialist doctor. After all the tests were over, the doctor gave his report. Every thing was normal in her condition of health.
