Field Hockey Research Paper
Field hockey is a game in which two teams attempt to score a goal by using sticks that are curved at one end. Each team is comprised of 11 players, usually 5 forwards, 3 halfbacks, 2 fullbacks, and 1 goalkeeper and 5 substitutes. A match between two teams consists of two halves, each 30-35 minutes in duration. At halftime the teams take a short break before changing direction and defending the opposite end. Field hockey is usually played outdoors on grass or an artificial turf field. The field is 100 yards long and between 55 and 60 yards wide. A coin toss is done to figure out who will start the game with the ball. One player from the team that wins the toss starts the game by hitting the ball into play with a pass to a teammate. The players tap the ground with their sticks once, then tap their sticks together three times before going for the ball. The other players must be at least 5 yards from the ball during a Bully. The ball is moved toward the goal by use of the stick, using only the flat left-hand side. Players make advances towards the opposition’s goal by either dribbling, pushing the ball along or by passing to a teammate. They will either take the ball on or pass to another teammate until they reach the striking circle. This is the zone in front of the goal that is a semicircle with a radius of 16 yards, affectionately nicknamed the “D”. All goals have to be scored from inside this space. Goals are scored when the ball passes over the goal line between the two goal posts. These are centrally positioned on each end line. For the goal to count, however, the ball must either be struck by a player inside the striking circle or touch the stick of an attacking player, standing inside the striking circle, before crossing the line. If play becomes too intense, fouls or infractions become more common. The infraction that is made most often is …show more content…
It is usually called when the ball comes above the knees of nearby players or when a high ball goes into a crowd of players. A foul is also committed if the stick is used in a dangerous manner. Officials may award a free hit, a penalty corner, or a penalty stroke to the offended team. A free hit means that the offended player gets possession of the ball with defenders at least five yards away. This is awarded for any minor fouls occurring outside the circle. In a penalty corner, the ball is placed on the goal line at least 10 yards from the nearest goal post. One attacking player hits the ball to a teammate just outside the striking circle line. No shot on goal may be taken until the ball is stopped outside the circle. All attackers must be outside the circle before the shot is taken. On defense, a maximum of five defenders may be behind the goal line while the remaining defenders must be positioned beyond the centerline. Penalty corners are awarded for any infraction within the striking circle or when a defender intentionally sends the ball into touch beyond the goal line. A penalty stroke is one-on-one between an offensive player seven yards in front of the goal vs. a goalkeeper on the goal

Modern day hockey is a very high paced high action game. The NHL is comprised of 30 different teams from Canada and the USA. In the NHL there are 6 Canadian and 24 American Teams. The 30 teams get split into two conferences of 15 teams; each conference is split into three divisions of five teams. Each team has an 82 regular season schedule. The top 8 teams from each conference move on to the playoffs also known as the “post-season”. In the playoffs there are best of seven series, your opponent is matched from your regular season standings. In the playoffs there are three twenty minute periods and a five on five twenty minute overtime session if the two teams are still tied after regulation. That differs from the regular season because a tie is broken with a five minute overtime period with four players a side. If the tie is not broken after the five minutes the game moves into a shootout where the team with the most goals after three shooters wins the game. If the winner is still not decided the shootout moves into sudden death. The goals, assists and points leader of all time is held by likely the most inspiring hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky. Wayne is also known as his well deserved nickname “The Great One”. Wayne’s number 99 was retired by the NHL…

Soccer rules are different from any other sports. One rule that has stayed the same since soccer began is only the goalie may touch the ball with his hands. Players are not allowed to trip, hold, shove, push, kick or strike any other player on the field. When players break these rules, the other team gets the ball and may be given a free shot to earn a goal. Each team may have eleven players on the field at the same time.…

During a game, the overall objective is to eliminate every member of the opposing team. Opponents will throw the ball at the opposing team in order to hit them and therefore eliminate them from play. However, the ball cannot touch the ground at all before it hits a member of the opposing team or it does not count and the player remains in the game. Also, if the player were to catch the ball being thrown, then the player that threw that ball is eliminated…

College has so far exceeded my expectations in a huge way. As a new member of the ice hockey team there were many uncertainties and worries, as well as tons of excitements and anticipations. Obviously the biggest part, school, was nerve wracking and exciting too. In college hockey its very common that players take a few years off of school prior to attending, to play hockey in junior hockey leagues. This created a bit more nerves then excitement for the classroom aspect of school since i've only taken 3 college courses since graduating high school, making it a bit harder to get back into the swing of things. Besides getting back into school routine, being a hockey player in college has made the beginning…

On the other hand, defensive strategies between the two games are very dissimilar, almost opposite to each other. In European Handball, the defensive side's aim is to defend their zone, block shots of a shooting players and try and intercept the ball as it travels down court. This differs to Futsal as defenders try and steal the ball off their marked player and mostly protect areas in the middle of the field, as most goals are scored from the centre of the field. Unlike how defending players protect their goal in European handball, the goalie in Futsal is the last line of defence, and is part responsible for blocking goals from shooting players.…

In rugby the games is consisted of strength, discipline, technique and passion. There are very little differences in Rugby league and Rugby union. In Rugby union the teams have two extra forwards, and rugby field goals and points for penalty kicks are also different. A game of rugby will be played over two 40 minute halves of which the players are divided into backs, and forward. There are usually eight forwards whose jobs are to gain possession of the ball and give it to the backs. The backs will run and play and work together to score tries. A try, is scored when a player grounds the ball in the opponent’s goal, after a try one player will attempt a conversion. A conversion is a kick from a spot on the field that is in-line with where the try was scored. A goal however is scored from either a conversion after a try or from the spot where the referee has awarded a penalty. At any time during general play a field goal can be scored, by drop-kicking the ball over the cross bar. At the end the team with the most number of points is the winner.…
