Field Experience Research Paper
For students in the process of obtaining their BSW, I think the field experience is critical because without it, you just read about the field in a textbook. You have to go out and see things that are actually happening with your own eyes in order to really learn. I think it’s great that you included about the problems that people are facing nowadays. No matter what the cause, there are some people who are not able to manage things happening in their lives, which is where a social worker comes in. As we learned, the social worker is then able to connect them with community resources, and if they have a higher degree, can even offer counseling to the client in need.

While initially successful, the moment that President Johnson confiscated the land given to us, the Freedmen, under Sherman's Field Order 15, Reconstruction failed. This land should have remained the rightful property of the Freedmen as a gesture of concession, validity of African American rights, and just punishment to white planters.…

To fulfill my three-hour field experience, I observed in Kristen Yenchak’s Emotional Support (BASD) classroom at Bloomsburg Middle School, on September 21, 2016 from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Kristen Yenchak’s classroom was made up of nine students ranging from sixth to eighth grade. There were also two paraprofessionals in the classroom to help students when they came to the class and also go and assist students while they are in general education classes. By having two paraprofessionals and one teacher in the classroom it allowed for the class to have instructional sizes of 1:1 or 1:3. All nine students except for one student only came to the class for homeroom, one other period of the day, and right before dismissal. The only other time these students…

Within the museum you’re exposed to over 30,000 artifacts and several exhibitions that were primarily set out for individual pieces of African American history. It made me feel like I was taking a closer encounter with history and the importance of the African American culture and life. Every exhibition had its own feel to it, and its own relevance, with each display and individual storyline, made it all the more very special. I think with every exhibition, the intention was to make people feel like they were truly once a part of that time and age. Although, it’s difficult to imagine any more of what lies in the roots of African American history and life, I…

This was certainly stressed throughout the weekend, especially in regards to the micro aspect of human services and counseling. A social worker cannot truly work with a person or family until he or she understands the biological conditions that are playing a role within the system. However, I am surprised that this class was chosen to replace the biology requirement for the social work major. Since the idea of biology was stressed so much and we could not possibly learn all of the information, I feel an actual human biology class would be more beneficial overall. By taking a semester of this class, social workers would be more prepared to work in the field and help clients work through their medical conditions. I know many other BSW programs require students to take biology classes and are often required for graduate programs, so I would rather have taken that. I certainly enjoyed the public health class and felt that what I learned will be applicable later on, but a one-credit course does not allow students to necessarily dive deep enough into some of the topics. I think it would be a great supplemental course, either required or as an elective, to discuss the prevention of various conditions that were discussed in the biology class. Although I have only taken one social work course thus far…

Today’s technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate. However, as tech focused companies continue to profit and expand, their emphasis on innovation for the masses diminishes. Manufacturers are expected to release one or more new flagship products every year, in turn implicating an incentive to place aside supporting older generations in favor of quarterly profits. Planned obsolescence is the idea of a consumer product being purposely made with the intent of being replaced and becoming obsolete. Ultimately, my question would be whether planned obsolescence is a necessary step in the advancement of technology.…

In this essay I will discuss how I feel that I have developed personally and professionally as a social work student during the first level of the degree course. I will do this through examination of reflective accounts recorded during the placement learning opportunity. I believe that the use of reflection has been very significant in enhancing my personal skills and learning about my own values. I also believe that the course has instilled me with more self awareness and has given me a better understanding of how I am perceived by others. I have learned that through anti oppressive practice, social workers are able to promote inclusion by challenging discrimination and inequalities. In this essay, I will examine the methods, tools, and techniques that I have learned to date. I will conclude by discussing my particular learning needs and plan for the remainder of the course. As part of this, I will consider my learning style and the necessary methods I will utilise to bridge the learning gaps.…

The tasks completed during my BSW senior year field placement with the Department of Social Services varied. Conducting home visits with my supervisor while observing client behaviors in the foster home was a task I completed frequently. During these visits, my supervisor introduced me to clients and displayed how to properly conduct client in home assessment forms. These assessment forms would contain information pertaining to the client’s living conditions in their foster homes and would document the physical and psychological needs of the client to help them improve independent living skills; better preparing them for transition out of care. Also, I was allowed the opportunity to attend a school meeting discussing a client’s 504 behavioral plan. During this activity, it was discussed why the client was placed in the alternative school rather than being placed in regular school. After the meeting, the team concluded that the client was misplaced and that the client would developmentally progress within the school’s environment. This activity allowed me to see the importance of advocating for clients. This client’s worker did not accept the client being placed in alternative school and therefore did everything in her power to be placed back in regular school where the client best fit. Lastly, while interning at the Department of Social Services, I spent time updating Child Tracking Forms and Psychological Evaluation Reference lists; contacting different organizations exploring the services they provide clients who have experienced trauma. Completing this activity help me improve my ability to find local resources that will assist with advocating for clients. The activities completed while interning at the Department of Social Service has better prepared me for working with diverse populations within the community.…

My field study was conducted at the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars (T.A.G.) Middle School located in the East Harlem section of Manhattan. T.A.G. is a selective public school, governed by the NYC Department of Education. It was founded in 1989 as a magnet program within the school system’s District 4, and became an independent K-8 gifted and talented school in 2004. T.A.G. is one of only three gifted and talented programs in New York City. It serves students identified with gifted abilities in grades K-8. Children are admitted to kindergarten through 2nd grade based on their scores on two tests, the Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT) and the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA). Children whose scores put them in the 97th percentile nationally are eligible. There are a handful of seats open in the upper grades. Middle school admission is based on grades, standardized test scores and teacher recommendations. There are approximately 500 students comprised mainly of African-American, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern backgrounds, reportedly only 2% of the student body is Caucasian. Each grade level has two classes of up to 25 students each. The school is located in a building that houses four other mini schools, a common practice in schools these days. For instance the high school I attended has been divided into five different high schools.…

After reading several of my students posting for this week, I can see the similarities in ever practicum settings. Even though, we all complete our practicum at different settings, the overall role and services were the same. As a social worker our goals are to be that helping agent that connect people to different services. At Adult Protection Services, case workers are advocate, facilitators, case managers, brokers, and networkers. Personally speaking to be a successfully social worker, we have to be all those professional skills and roles. Our job consist of advocating on behalf of our clients, assisting with services, linking clients outside resources and services, and fighting the state and federal government to ensure these vulnerable people continue to have their rights.…

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Assisting in a vast array of societal facets, social workers rely on theories and frameworks to pilot…
