March 15, 2014 Young Girls Innocence Have you ever thought about why young girls are so ready to grow up and become sexually active? If you haven’t you might should think about it. What is the real reason? Why is it so easy for teenagers to give up their life to be sexually active and grow up? They don’t know the consequences of growing up too fast and trying things out too early. In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, the author, Joyce Carol Oates uses the plot to reveal the struggles, dangers, and mental persuasions of teenage girls sexual innocence and becoming adult women too early. The struggles of becoming a woman too fast can be severe. Teenage girls especially get made fun of and talked bad about for having sex and for giving up their virginity too soon. Girls are very mean in middle and high school and start a lot of drama. The struggles can include, getting made fun of for having sex, being called names, getting a sexually transmitted disease, and being forced when you aren’t sure if you’re fully ready for the whole experience. In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Connie’s mom is constantly nagging her about how she could be prettier and how she is constantly wanting to dress up and do her hair and makeup, which makes Connie feel like she is isn’t good enough no matter what she does or looks like. This kind of behavior from parents can be very hurtful but it could also make the teenager rebel and go doing what the mom said she shouldn’t, which leads to Connie going out on dates with guys that she has just met and dressing provocatively to where she gives guys the wrong intentions. Not only are there struggles when it comes to growing up too quickly but there are also dangers. The dangers could be life threatening. The dangers of dressing and acting like you’re older than you are could lead to stalking, kidnapping, rape, bad intentions, wrong impressions and making people think that one is older than they are. In the story, Connie finds out the true dangers of dressing older than she is, wearing a lot of makeup, and fixing her hair in grow up ways. She suddenly finds herself being stalked at her house one day when a random guy that she couldn’t remember meeting before drives up and threatens to kill her family if she doesn’t get in the car with him and his friend to go for a drive. She is very scared and tries to call the police but he threatens to come inside and get her if she reaches for the phone. Situations like these do happen all the time and go unseen and this story really brings to life what could actually happen and has probably happened to a ton of teenage girls. Even though dangers and struggles should be enough, there are also mental persuasions of becoming a woman too early in life. The young lady could become depressed, get heart broken, have trust issues, become mentally unstable, have trouble understanding why a guy broke her heart, that is if the guy left after they had sex, and also a lot more problems. Girls, or teenage girls I should say, don’t think before they make choices that could affect the rest of their lives. They just really want to feel love, so they crave that attention and feeling of having someone there. No matter who the guy may be. Girls are very different from guys, especially when it comes to physical attractions. Girls get their hearts broken all the time, and most of the time it is very hard to get over it. But sometimes it’s not that easy, so when they are trying to grow up and experience things way before they should, they get hurt easier because they aren’t old enough to deal with the emotions that a grown woman can. She gets very confused and doesn’t understand anything anymore. Which is why teenage girls should just stay teenage girls and enjoy the time they have as a kid. In the story, “Where are you going, Where have you been?” the author, Joyce Carol Oates, is trying to get us to see that young girls act way too flirty and can get themselves into bad situations very easily, especially when it comes to boys, and if you look at the plot, you can see that the girl was flirting with the guy at the restaurant and when he found out where she lived then she was scared. But all along he thought that was what she wanted so he followed her and stalked her. That is why girls need to be careful of their actions and realize the dangers, struggles and mental persuasions of becoming adult women way too early.

To see just what this means, let’s consider the simpler form, the personal letter first.
