Opening Man has been doing cross breeding of crops since agriculture began. Genetic engineering is no different. 75% of foods already have been genetically modified since 1973. Many vegetables, fruits, and grains, have genetic modification that resists viruses, bacteria, and insects. Genetic modification also extends the shelf life of foods, creates more nutrition, and increases the yields of the crops. First of all what are GM foods? Genetically modified foods have changes put into their DNA by genetic engineers to improve the outcome of the species. The engineers can insert and delete any gene from any species. The reasons for genetically modifying food is to prevent having too many chemicals put into plants, which improve the environment, help cure diseases, help end world hunger, and lastly helping make more profit for the famer and lower price for the consumer. Genetically modified food not only helps us here at home, but also helps globally. For example, golden rice is rice that has been genetically modified to provide the needed vitamin A and is being used in India. 600,000 kids go blind a year because they do not have enough vitamin A. Before in India about two thirds of children under 5 years old got vitamin A supplements twice a year. They were given mega doses, but the problem is that most of the kids did not need mega doses. The solution for that is golden rice. If there is a way to help kids around the world, why wouldn’t we?
For many different reasons genetically modified food helps the environment. Genetically modified food helps be conserving water, soil, energy, and uses friendly bioherbisides and bioinsectisides. They can also be genetically modified to be pest resistant so that farmers don’t use tons of pesticides annually. People do not want to eat food with a lot of pesticides because of the potential of health risks. Also the Genetic engineers are working on making plants resistant to fungi and bacteria.
