Festivals and robberies in Mumbai
Beware at Juhu beach when you go for visarjans

With the final day of Ganpati visarjans set to take place, the Juhu lifeguards Association has unearthed a big racket that is rampant at the Juhu beach behind JW Marriot, Hotel Tulip Star, etc. Subroto Mukherjee, a lifeguard said, “Robberies at the beach are always more during Ganpati time. But this time the operation of the thieves is unique.”

At various points of Juhu Chowpatty, groups of young boys rob men who hang around after completing the visarjan rituals. With visarjan happening well into the wee hours of the morning, the robbers get started at their act between 11 pm and 3 am. D Bunty Rao, a lifeguard said, “Two boys generally dress up like women winking and blowing kisses to men who roam on the beaches. They attract them and then take them to a secluded spot where their gang members, about 5-7 of them come and beat up the victims, alleging sexual harassment, robbing them of their valuables in the process.”

The lifeguards have received a number of complaints in the last few days and were on alert last night when they managed to catch 5 men out of the group of 10 who were up to their mischief at the beach. Mukherjee and Rao were patrolling the beach near Hotel Tulip Star, when they saw a man being beaten up, they alerted the other lifeguards who came to rescue the man and nab the culprits.

Mukherjee said, “We were able to catch only five men, the others ran away. When we went to the police they just threatened them and let them go. However, we managed to click pictures of them.” The lifeguards claim that there are a number of gangs that operate in the dark portions behind the hotels along the Juhu Chowpatty stretch. T Kulkarni, a police official said, “There have been about 7 cases registered of robberies at the beach. We are looking into the matter.”

While on patrol in the last week, the lifeguards have found at least 20 people beaten and injured at the beach. Lifeguard

There are many reasons that I might want to be a lifeguard: my paycheck would increase, I could get a job in practically any community, and I could spend my days outside in the sun. None of these, however, are the reason I want to be a lifeguard. The real reason I want to become a lifeguard is because it would allow me to better – as both a person and as a pool employee. I know being a lifeguard involves lots of responsibility, but that is part of what intrigues me about it, the fact that I could be the difference between whether someone dies or whether they live. The confidence I would gain simply from knowing I am able to save someone else's life would not only make me more confident in my summer job of teaching swimming lessons, but in carrying myself through life in general. To me, this lifeguard class is a test not only of my physical ability to swim, dive, and correctly strap someone to a board, but a test of my will power, my ability to stay calm and perform under pressure.…

The author of “Gang Leader for a Day”, Sudhir Vankatesh, delivers an intimate look into a world most people would prefer to ignore. ABC’s 60 Minutes and National Geographic have made outstanding videos describing in great detail, gang life. Girls in the Hood, by ABC, informs that the notion of only males in gangs is false; that there are strong female leaders that are much involved in the gang as much as males. “Maximum Security”, by 60 Minutes, informs the audience about how gang leaders turned Pelican Bay, a prison fortress, into their own head courters of criminal activity. “World most Dangerous Gang”, by National Geographic, describes how important it is to deal with violent gangs and not make the same mistake twice.…

Having watched a flurry of action movies in which a superhero goes under water and has an easy time, I though it was going to be the same, however it was far from as easy and glamorized as shown. As I approached the water barefoot, the excitement that I held about entering the water and exploring it was replaced with a sharp pain shooting from my foot, which was the result of sharp seashells on the beachfront. Prior to going to this beach in Cozumel, I have only visited local US beaches that are known tourist spots. This was in a foreign country, and I assume the beaches have not have not been manicured to make the sand free of sharp objects; and my foot was destined to step on the largest and pointiest ones.…
