Fertility and Sperm
Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Introduction Everyone is naturally pre-determined to have an offspring. This would just exist in a relationship of a man and woman. It is not always true in a relationship if there is a new life that will be formed. Several factors may contribute to the hindrances in the formation of new life especially to man because male (sperm) gamete is the one responsible to initiate fertilization, the union of male (sperm) and female (ovum) gametes. These may include low sperm counts, poor sperm quality, anatomical problems and hormonal imbalances. These factors were also described under male infertility which leads to inability to produce offspring. Pre-fabricated drugs to treat this are readily available in the market, but it is associated with some undesirable effects. Talahib (Saccharum spontaneum) is one of the most abundant plants found in the Philippines especially in open areas. The different parts of talahib are pharmaceutically used as diuretic, poultice, purgative, astringent and emollient. It is also found to be an aphrodisiac that has an effect to arouse sexual desire which may resemble to boost fertility. The researchers aim to prove the effectiveness of ethanolic extract of talahib on spermatocyte proliferation in male rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The leaves of talahib will be used in this experiment. The researchers will also conduct phytochemical screening for the determination of the different chemical constituents present in the talahib leaves. Thus, if the ethanolic extract of talahib leaves will be proven effective, it would be beneficial to those couple who desires to have an offspring most especially to male which is the focused of this study on spermatocyte proliferation.

Statement of the Problem This study deals with the determination of the efficacy of ethanolic extract of talahib leaves on spermatocyte proliferation.
Specifically, the study aims to answer the

Secondly, for male cancer patients with fertility plans after chemotherapy or radiation therapy, sperm storage is an efficient and essential procedure. According to current literature, testicular cancer accounts for 26.1% of all cancers diagnosed in men aged 20–24 years and Hodgkin’s disease accounts for an additional 15.2% of cancers in the same age group (1). Advances in chemotherapy have greatly improved the cure rate of these malignancies: the 5-year survival rate for testicular cancer is 95% and that of Hodgkin’s disease is 80% (2, 3). The malignancy itself (especially testicular cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia) impairs spermatogenesis. Chemoradiotherapy is potentially gonadotoxic because the germinal epithelium of the testis is…

The miracle of life is at the same time amazingly complex and alarmingly simple. It all starts with the act of love. During intercourse, a man can ejaculate up to 500 million sperm inside a woman’s vagina. Each sperm carries the father’s genetic code (or DNA). A man’s testes are constantly at work, churning out over 1000 sperm every second (Rathus, 2011). The quality of the sperm depends on the man’s age, lifestyle, his diet, and more.…

Infertility, or sterility, is the inability to produce offspring or the inability to conceive. Although the majority of American men and women assume that they will mature, fall in love, and create children of their own, the rate of fertility continues to decrease over the years, and the American dream of becoming a parent does not always become a reality. Although some men and women are complacent with adoption or an egg/sperm donation, others who plan for a child of their own consider infertility as a major devastation. Research has shown that over thirty percent of women in America experience complications with fertility and fourteen percent of all clinically recognized pregnancies in America result in a miscarriage or stillbirth (Schwerdtfeger). However, fertility is not just a concern for females. For centuries, if a couple were unable to have children, the fault was put on the women, although we now know that both men and women suffer equally from fertility complications. Among couples who are infertile, about forty percent of cases are exclusively due to female infertility, forty percent to male infertility and ten percent involving problems with both partners (McArthur). The factor of not being able to produce offspring is a hard concept to endure for both genders, and can result in severe emotional issues that can be sustained for an extended period of time. The effects of being infertile can take a severe toll on one’s relationship with family, friends, and most commonly, their significant other.…

Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group in almost all kind of animal. Also, testosterone is the hormone that produced by testis and prostate. An animal test by the three researchers from the University of Texas suggested the ingredient in marijuana so called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has significant impacts on testosterone. Those researchers prepared four mice on both experiment and control groups, and then they inject liquid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on the experiment group. All four mice’s testosterone level and other sex hormone has increase significantly and instantly. Their testosterone level has increase six times more than normal and it continuous for around 20 minutes. However, after 20 minutes their testosterone level has drop significantly and lower than the control group (Todd, 2002). Under the normal sexual stimulation, it usually takes about 20 minutes to luteinizing hormone to be produced, and travel to the tests to produce testosterone. After the researchers injected the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) into the mice, the brain senses shut down instantly and the adequate level of sex hormone has been reached to the point. Consequently, those four mice’s testosterone increase and their sexual response have increase as well. However, this effect is only temporarily. The hormonal level went back to normal after a short period of time (Todd, 2008). This…
