Fences By August Wilson: Summary

The play, “Fences,” by August Wilson contains the story of a man and the relationship he shares with his friends and family. The scene begins with Cory mimicking his father, Troy, bat swings and tells himself he wouldn’t quit football. Troy arrives from releasing his brother, Gabriel, from police custody by bribing them $50 and had happened 6-7 times in the past. Troy starts to build fences for the yard as Bono said he had seen how friendly Troy is becoming with Alberta and replies his like that with everybody. Cory entered the yard to help Troy and ask what the purpose for the fences which Bono answer is to keep people out and some people in. Troy confused by Bono, ask him what did he meant by it while Cory left to get another saw and Bono
Troy explained some kids were picking on Gabriel and he was disturbing the peace, but the conversation changed to a confession about him impregnating another woman. Gabe somehow got himself in the middle of the conversations but quickly leaves and Rose tell Troy she tired of the siblings in her family having different parents. Troy excuse was that the woman made him feel special and the argument intensifies to the point Troy grab tightly onto Rose arm and Cory attack his father to defend his Mother. They all went their separate ways after the fight and 6 months had passed since. It been a long time since Rose had spoken to Troy and asked him to stop seeing Alberta which he responds she is in labor and needs him to visit her. Rose start to interrogate Troy and wonder why Gabriel is lock away in a hospital with Troy given money as compensation. Then the house phone rings and Rose goes to answer it when she hears Alberta had died giving birth to a girl. 3 more days passed, Troy comes home with the newborn name Raynell and convince Rose to be her new mother. Another 2 months passed, and Lyon enters the house to drop off the $20 dollars he borrowed from Troy but left soon
