The word abortion means the "Also called voluntary abortion. The removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy." (Dictionary). Abortion is a major issue in the world today. People in many countries are having abortion each year even if it is going against their religion. There are many arguments for and against abortion. It is a really polemic topic to write and talk about and it causes controversies wherever is being discussed. Today, the country is basically divided by two groups the Pro-life and Pro-choice. The first group claims that they are fighting to save a life that can not protect itself. It also says that the abortion is a sin and the women who submit themselves to such aggressive procedure are sinners. The other part states that they respect the choice of the women. The right of having an abortion is absolutely their choice. This will be a never end discussion, because neither part will never give up in this war.…
The issue of a woman’s right to her own body, within the last few decades, has become a progressively intriguing social dilemma in American society. More specifically the topic of abortion is not as taboo as it was thirty years ago although the debate has continued as to whether or not the decision should rest solely on the woman. Merriam Webster defines abortion as the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus as induced expulsion of the human fetus. This is a controversial subject that can be argued quite effectively for or against a woman’s right to choose. The three major sociological perspectives of conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and functionalism all take a different stance on abortion. These theoretical viewpoints are shared, in no particular order, to sociologists Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim. The following will attempt to explain these sociologists’ viewpoint on the issue of abortion and how the woman might arrive at the decision to either continue or terminate her pregnancy.…
Abortion, the termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first twenty-eight weeks of pregnancy. When the topic abortion is brought up there are usually two sides of the arguments. No matter which side you have personally taken it is important to understand what the opposing position believes. There is the pro-choice point of view and there is the pro-life point of view. An antiabortionist believes that the fetus is a human being from the moment of conception; this means abortion is murder, which is immoral and should be illegal. They also believe that If the pregnancy is the result of carelessness on the mother’s part she should have to deal with the consequences. It is ultimately her responsibility to prevent pregnancy…
It s degrading to know that a whole gender is being taken advantage of. Women’s capabilities are as strong as men’s are. The thought that women are not allowed to choose over a personal decision that directly affects them is skeptical. Pomeroy argues that women, on abortion, are being discredited from what distinguishes them as women pointing out, “Not only does abortion serve to alienate women from identifying with what defines us as special, it also acts as a device that eludes the root of discrimination against women.” (Pomeroy, 2008) The power to bring life into this Earth is given to them, and the power to make such a strenuous decision should lay best in their hands as they are best fitted for the…
The debate over whether abortion should be legal and to what point in the pregnancy it should be allowed has polarized many societies. Many religious preach that at the moment of conception, the new life is human and possesses a soul. Therefore, abortion is murder. Other, less extreme views, suggest the life is not human until there is a recognizable "completion of form." A third view proposes we have an obligation to create a good life for all children already born before we bring more unwanted children into the world.…
There has been an ongoing controversy surrounding the moral and legal status of abortion. The two main groups involved are the pro-choice movement (the right of women to choose whether to keep the fetus) and the pro-life movement (the right of the unborn child to be born).…
At the most fundamental level, abortion, the right to have one or not, is a reflection of the female role in society. Conflict perspective, which analyzes the power relations between men and women, illustrates how women are still not viewed as equal in our society. The governmental regulations of abortion, how, where, and when they can be performed, is another expression of how women’s roles are minimized in society. The fact that the government is involved in the personal choices women make regarding their own health and bodies is indicative of women’s lack of agency. Even with the advent of the introduction of equal rights our society is still patriarchal and predominately white. And when viewed through this lenses, bias is inevitable. Gender differences are a reflection of suppression of one group (women) by another group (men).…
This paper explores the two contrasting views on abortion by giving arguments against and for abortion. These views are broken up into both pro-choice or pro-life activists and their beliefs on abortion. Pro-choice activist believe that a woman should ultimately make their own decision to their bodies. In contrast, pro-life activist believe that all life should be preserved. This paper examines the ceaseless debate from both parties and the different pressures in life that can influence a woman to have an abortion.…
Opposing Viewpoints Online Context defines abortion as a medical and surgical procedure that ends during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion became legal in the U.S Supreme Court in the year of 1973 because it is now considered “safe”. The reason it is considered safe because of modern medicine and more modern surgical tools (Abortion Facts). Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies of all time. Many people believe it is immoral and even consider it to be murder. Abortion is defined as: the termination of pregnancy by the removal from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth. Pro-life believers do not support this idea of induced abortion and believe it should be illegal. Many of these supporters do not realize that if abortion were illegal they would still be performed; back-alley abortions, as well as self-induced abortions have been done as long as history has been written, unfortunately by illegalizing abortion it is not preventing it from happening, rather forcing women to once again undergo unsafe, potentially harmful situations.…
The controversial debate over abortion laws has been the focus of much political and societal attention over the past century. The term “pro-choice” outlines the belief that a women should have the right to control her own body, and in turn, the right to an induced abortion. The main concern of pro-life supporters is for the health of the unborn fetus in the woman’s womb, regarding it as an individual with rights to life, and that abortion is an extreme violation of these rights. However, this standpoint is extremely flawed. The majority of all abortions take place within the first trimester, while the fetus is attached to the mother through the placenta and umbilical cord, and is completely dependent on her health. At this stage in the pregnancy, a fetus cannot be regarded as an individual entity with rights and reasons. Reflecting the evolving perceptions and moral standards of society, the procedure involving the removal of a fertilized egg from a woman’s cervix has become a topic regarding much social stigma in Western societies. Despite the debate and controversy over this medical treatment, it is crucial that women in contemporary society have access to abortions and the right to choose, specifically because of the imminent dangers in illegal abortion clinics, instances such as rape or incest, and especially the basic human rights that the female population is entitled to. The implications of abortion laws cannot be regarded as insignificant in modern society, and the importance of their abolishment correlates directly with the emotional, physical, and psychological well being of would-be mothers.…

For assignment number two I chose an article from The New York Times on abortion. The article is titled: When Abortion becomes birth: A Dilemma of Medical Ethics Shaken by New Advances (New York Times). The main ethical question following this article is: when if ever is an abortion ethical according to deontology? Abortion by dictionary definition is “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy” (“Abortion.” Merriam-Webster). Abortion is one of the most controversial ethical issues because it concerns the taking of a human life. Anti-abortion regulations first began to appear in the United States during the 1820s. Although the most influential case was the Roe Vs…
