“Billy stared into the patina of the corporal's boots, saw Adam and Eve in the golden depths.”(Chapter 2) This is a biblical allusion to Adam and Eve, the mother and father of humanity in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Heroes are often from divine ancestry, and are noted for their feats of courage and nobility of purpose. Often a hero is someone who has risked, or even sacrificed their life. Billy Budd, Sailor, by Herman Melville, contains one hero named Billy Budd, the "angel of God" (1906). Claggart and Captain Vere contain some of the heroic characteristics, still Billy is the singe character that obtains all of the traits of a hero, and therefore is the most qualified to fill that position. While Melville strains to put some heroic attributions within each character of the story, Billy is the most prominent of all who are mentioned. Thus, Billy Budd is the one true hero within the entire story.…

“The concept of a hero has many meanings and aspects. In every culture and period, there have always been heroes. They represent a human universal, something very basic, which is connected to all human souls. The hero symbolises a goal, a role model and an example that inspires identification. Every generation chooses and creates its heroes. Real or imaginary heroes permit us to fulfil aspirations latent within us. Folk tales about heroes always contain a confrontation between a hero, whose victory exemplary, and a defeated opponent. There is a moment of struggle in which good overcomes evil. (Samson: the hero and the man: the story of Samson pg 271). “The attitude in the bible toward the subject of the hero is complex. In the sources, there is pronounced rejection of the ideal of heroism, replacing it with the ideal of restraint and self control: “he that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (prov.16:32). The bible teaches that ones true enemy within, and one should not seek an external enemy. Rather one should battle against the flaws in ones character”. (Samson: the hero and the man: the story of Samson pg 275). Does Eve or Adam fit the character of the hero?…

I assume since diagnosed with amnesia Adam has slowly established an emotional imbalance and insecurity. Since the inception of his sessions with Brint he has portrayed himself as a character stifling with frustration but doesn’t quiet seem how to presume Brint to be like. Adam feels he is alienated from the world and lonely and therefore he doesn’t know what to think of Brint. He is confused if Brint is willing to help him or not and Adam isn’t disposed nor brave enough to trust Brint. Another example that depicts the idea of not being brave, in Carver the text mentioned specifically how his check was wet despite the fact it was raining. He was crying. He felt that he was alone. He was afraid of continuing without the aid of Amy Hertz. Finally his panic attack was significant in displaying Adams insecurity. The text states how Adam felt isolated and suspended in an unknown land. He felt his name was merely a couple of words and was as functional a Kitchen, stairs or cellar. He felt he didn’t even know who Adam Farmer was anymore. This all demonstrates how Adam’s lack of…
