Most people’s perception of fear comes from negative standpoint, where fear is the evil villain that you try to get away from, but can fear also be helpful? In all good stories, there is always a dilemma, and with the struggle of that problem comes fear, but what truly shows that character’s mental strength or personality is how they handle that problem. In the stories, ¨The Tell-Tale Heart,” ¨The Pit and the Pendulum,”and ¨The Masque of the Red Death,” all of the main characters experience fear, but handle it in very different ways. Whether they use that fear to help them overcome the problem, or their fear results in paranoia. Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, irony, and figurative language to portray how fear distorts the emotional state…

Fear is defined as a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. This emotion is expressed immensely throughout the novel, The Plot Against America. By reading the first paragraph, the reader can't imagine what horrifying events could lead one to have such a fear. "Fear presides over these memories, a perpetual fear. Of course no childhood is without its terrors, yet I wonder if I would have been a less frightened boy if Lindbergh hadn't been president or if I hadn't been the offspring of Jews." (Roth 1) Philip Roth, the son of Herman and Bess Roth, had such a permanent fear of Charles Lindbergh,(the supposed next president of the United States in the 1940 election against Franklin Roosevelt, controlling the world and ruining his and his family's life, as well as the rest of the Jews), that his thoughts while awake and dreaming are taken over by the fear of losing his family, his house, and everything he has ever known. The quote about fear that starts off the story is very significant because it foreshadows the danger ahead.…

Fear is a distressing state of mind aroused by impending danger, evil, and even mental pain. The idea of fear is greater than fear itself. It is an emotion that we subconsciously create, it is the emotion evoked by the idea of believing illusions, lies and false information. Fear is what drives us to execute actions that we would never normally do, unrestrained from the presence of fear we act with morality, thought and discipline. In Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe, fear is evident throughout Okonkwo's life. The fear of being anything close to his father Unoka, the fear of acting anything other than a man and the fear of adjusting to anything other than his own social customs is what drove him over the edge and into a noose. Overtaken by fear, Okonkwo commits senseless actions for the sake of living up to his own selfish expectations.…
