The three most important points to include in a public nutrition program would be: * Consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods within and across the food groups * Limit the intake of saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, sodium (salt), and alcohol. * Limit caloric intake to meet caloric needs. (Healthy People 2013)

A person could probably name several reasons for consuming and healthier diet and participating in a regular exercise program. Heart disease would be one of the reasons specifically. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. More than 616,000 people die of heart diseases in the U.S. each year. That is about 25% of all U.S. deaths. According to the American Heart Association, all cardiovascular disease costs $444.2 billion on average every year, including health care services, medications, and lost productivity. (American Heart Association)
Educating patients to choose healthy meals, snacks and foods high in fiber/low in fat/sodium can help prevent high blood pressure, one of the precursors of heart disease. Nurses encourage patients to maintain a healthy weight as this will also decrease the risk for heart disease.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service: Improve those aspects of dietary quality most related to the population burden of chronic disease and unhealthy child development. http://www.fns.usda.gov/about-fns/ 2.     A good way to stay healthy is through exercise and a good diet Practicing these two prevents many types of health concerns like heart attack, diabetes, osteoporosis, gastric problems, and vitamin deficiencies’. Additionally exercising helps to keep one limber and works important muscles. People exercise in a number of ways some examples are jogging, swimming, aerobics, and Pilates. Here are good examples of how diseases from unhealthy diets cause nutritional problems. Atrophy of muscles; a condition where muscles become weak from disuse can be a result of improper exercise and poor nutrition practices. In the past a disease that was a direct result of improper eating was scurvy, which is a condition related to a lack of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Ways to solve this could be to include oranges, cabbage, or tomatoes in somebody’s diet. Another one was beriberi which is a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1) that affects many systems of the body, including the muscles, heart, nerves, and digestive system. A possible solution to this ailment would be brown rice or whole grain breads. Today these vitamin deficiencies are unheard of thanks to proper diets. However, some health issues cannot always be answered with a healthy diet, a healthy diet and proper exercise improves health and may even lower health care costs because a healthy diet provides important nutrients that are imperative to body function and also exercise helps muscle tone and physical performance. These ideas will mean fewer trips to their doctor’s office which will lower someones health care costs in the long…
