Favorite Valentine Day's Poem
Valentine's Day is a day full of romance and love. On this special day, many people will take this opportunity to express their deepest love and care to their boyfriend or girlfriend. Among all poems and songs from the sixties to the twenty first century, I think that the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe is the perfect Valentine's Day poem.

The poem told a story about the persona's girlfriend, Annabel Lee died years ago. They had become couple from they were a young age. It describes the feelings of persona and the anger he expressed. Although it was a poem about death and anger, it portraits that love can last forever despite the difficulties, sadness or misery one may face if they keep their faiths and trust on each other and giving them your only love.

Annabel Lee used a lot of poetry devices such as repetition and imagery. In the poem, the phrase "the kingdom by the sea" was repeated four times. It is repeated like the chorus of a song, specifying the main image again and again. The sea, usually lonely and cold, is a nice reflection of the emptiness and desolation that the persona feels about losing Annabel. Also, if the kingdom becomes a symbol of the power of people, then the sea is all about the power of nature. I like the kind of neat how Poe can tie humans and the natural world together in one phrase like that. These show that Annabel was really an important person in the speaker's life.

My favorite stanza in the poem is:

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

This stanza told that their love will last longer than anyone else on earth, and nothing can change their sincere love to each other. I especially appreciated this stanza because the persona's words are very touching, expressing that neither things in heaven, on earth or in hell can separate Annabel and he. Although Annabel Lee was gone, their love in mind and in soul will last till the end of world.

This poem touches my heart upon reading it. I felt the deepest love of the persona and Annabel. And so, I think that this will be the perfect Valentine's Day poem.

The word choice argues that although this may have happened years ago the pain is still persists and hurts the man like it was yesterday. The word choice also indicates that Annabel Lee might have been apart of a hierarchy. She lived in a kingdom, was called maiden, and when she was taken away from her lover it was described as “So that her highborn kinsmen came.” (line 17) Poe uses alliteration often in this poem. It gives the poem a smooth flow. Examples of alliteration can be found stanza 4 (line 25-26) “That the wind came out of the cloud by night/Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.” And again in stanza 5 (line 28-29) “Of those who were older than we/ of many far wiser than we.” An example of internal rhyme in this poem is also the “chilling and killing” alliteration and in stanza 5 when the speaker says ever and dissever. In stanza 5 and 6 Poe uses imagery and figures of speech to help us feel the speakers…

With insistent meter and captivating rhyme schemes, Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven" are both very similar. However, in their views of love, namely the loss and mourning of beautiful women, they differ greatly. Through analysis of the two poems, the reader observes that whom Poe had chosen for a speaker, the tone and the sound effects are all factors in both poems that make two poems with a similar theme contrast.…

    Explication of Annabel Lee

The purpose of the first stanza is to paint a picture of scene where the poem is taking place. It starts off like a fairy tale, telling the audience that the story we are about to hear occurred “many a year ago” in a “kingdom by the sea” (Poe1-2). Poe uses repetition to remind his audience of the location in the second line of every stanza because these minute details are significant because the sea and the kingdom are the major images of the poem and it creates a sort of hypnotizing effect on the reader, which Poe is synonymous for. In the next two lines he introduces the main character by the name of Annabel Lee. He calls her a maiden, inferring that she is fairly young and presumably attractive, and it also keeps with the general tone of the poem. In the next two lines Poe reveals his purpose for writing the poem, which is that him and Annabel Lee were deeply and passionately in love, so much so that all they could think about day to day was each other.…

The structure of ‘Our Love Now’ is on the page the way it is because it is showing the reader how badly this woman’s been hurt and how they’re breaking-up, yet the man doesn’t want it. There is no clear rhythm or rhyme as it is designed to give the reader an idea of a strained and painful relationship. In ‘Our Love Now’ the form on the page is very neat as it is 6 lines per stanza until the final stanza on either side, which is 7 lines. This poem in itself however, is quite irregular as it can either be read across or downwards, this creates the impression of a discussion if read across. If the poem is read downwards then this reinforces the distance between them as it looks like two separate monologues. It is almost like the poet trying to get the point across that whichever way you read it the same thing has broken the relationship yet in no way, shape or form can it be mended. It shows the unplanned route in the relationship and the ups and the downs that the relationship may have had. In ‘Valentine’ however, although the poem is in a neat line down the middle of the page, there is no structure to each individual stanza. The way the poem is presented on the page leads me to believe that there is not an argument within this poem, just a series of observations about love, how simple it can be if honesty…

“Annabel Lee” by the infamous poet, Edgar Allan Poe, is without a doubt the greatest poem of all-time. The poem was published in 1849 and is about a man’s beautiful young wife dying (Shmoop). The first reason for this is that it carries a significant historical piece to it which is that it was the last major poem by arguably the best poet, Edgar Allan Poe, and was published immediately after his mysterious death, which provides it with an interesting background. It is only sensible that the best poem ever is written by one of the best poets ever. In addition, this poem is well known because of its famous author and its use in albums such as, In Your Dreams by Stevie Nicks and movies like Holes. Also, the poem is about a topic that everyone…

The poem is kind of a way of protecting your heart. In it, the author states, “If suddenly you forget me do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you.” He goes on about forgetting about the other person, but only if she has already forgotten about him. At the end he changes his story and basically says that if she still loves him, then he will forever love her.…

The poem, as the title of it says, deals with remembrance. In this case the writer is addressing someone, a husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend. I feel that this work falls squarely into the category of lyric poetry. Lyric expresses the emotions of the poet as well as their thoughts and feelings. The poet is asking their significant other to remember them when they go away, which I interpret as dying. Through the first eight lines of the poem the writer is firm on the wish that their lover remember them, seemingly wishing for them to not move forward, but to keep up a vigil of remembrance of the other. In lines nine through fourteen the writer has a change of heart, saying if the lover has bad thoughts of their past, as well as feels guilty for forgetting the writer for an extended period of time saying " Line 13:Better by far you should forget and smile, Line 14:Than that you should remember and be sad.",In the end the writer chose to see past their self interest in being remembered and realized that the happiness and well being of their partner was more important, if they are truly loved they can never be forgotten.…

The way the poem is written leaves the gender of both parties in the relationship completely ambiguous. This completes the sense of universality within the poem as any man or woman can relate to it. Maintaining the undefined character of the speaker is part of what makes it such a great love poem for the ages. Barrett Browning 's famous sonnet may be a very formal poem, but it 's also straightforward and relatively accessible. One need not bring one 's mountaineering gear to climb this poem; it 's more like a short walk along the beach.…
