Fast Plants Materials and Methods
Fast Plants
Material and Methods
When first preparing our fast plants we had to set up four different systems that would dictate our variable of fluorescent light. Each system would provide light to our fast plants for different amounts of time per day. Our systems were set up for 0 hours of light, 6 hours of light, 12 hours of light, and 24 hours of light. To setup the lab we began to setup our lighting system with fluorescent a timer for each set of fast plants. Our 24 hours was set up in the classroom with a lighting system directly above it. For our 0,6, and 12 hours we placed the fast plants inside of a cabinet to prevent the fast plants from being exposed to outside light. Once our plant light houses were setup we began preparing the growing systems and plants. We started by using a thoroughly wet water mat and wick. We fed our wicks up through the bottom part of our plant pots, which were made out of Styrofoam. After the wick was fed through we placed the water on top so the top 3cm of the wick was touching the water mat. After preparing the wick and water mat we then placed the prepared soil and blue crystalized fertilizer in the plant pots. After the soil was placed we distributed 4 plant seed evenly throughout the plant pots. After we labeled each Styrofoam plant holder accordingly to date and variable used, we covered the plant seeds lightly with fertilizer. Once the seeds were planted we placed the Styrofoam holders on top of a container of water with bottoms of the wicks placed in the water. Then we placed four different Styrofoam pots under each of our lighting systems. Once the plants were placed we made sure the plants were about 10cm below the light. After the growing system and plants were complete we set the timers for the light systems to four different times: 0hrs, 6hrs, 12hrs, and 24hrs. After four days of growing we observed and measured each plant that grew in our 8 pots (4 seeds per pot). Once measured and the data was

It is a well-known fact that plants need light for nourishment, yet many people are ignorant of the reasons behind this. The biological process by which green plants utilize carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to form their own food is called photosynthesis (unknown). Past research has demonstrated that red and blue rays maximize this process (Rothenburger, 1993). The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effect of several different light sources on plant growth. The Five lights sources studied were incandescent, black, fluorescent, colored, and natural light.…

It is common knowledge that plants need light to grow and develop. This is done by the conversion of light energy into usable sugars during photosynthesis. Light absorbing molecules, known as pigments, absorb only specific wavelengths of visible light, mostly blue and red wavelengths (1). Whatever wavelength isn’t absorbed is reflected and the reflection is the color of plant we see. Plants also respond to wavelengths of light in non-photosynthetic related responses allowing them to adjust to their environment for optimal growth and development.…

Puprose: Just as we are happier and healthier when we receive adequate sunlight, so are the plants and vegetation that we grow. Sunlight, or other means of artificial lighting is essential to help a plant grow into maturity. It is also necessary in aiding the plant to get the nutrients it requires to mature into a strong healthy plant. The process of the sun or other light helping to feed the plant is called photosynthesis. The light acts as an energy source to help the plant separate carbohydrates from carbon dioxide. Moisture mixes with this and turns into a glucose and feeds the plant. The plant in turn releases oxygen into the air to make the air we breathe cleaner. In our plant lab, we use the different colors of light to help our plant grow. We used red, blue, normal classroom lighting and no lighting for lab. The purpose of this lab whether or not light had an effect on plant growth and which color.…

The results of this study showed that the mustard sprouts that were exposed in orange and green lights have slow development while the sprouts under red and blue light showed rapid development. Therefore, this study strongly suggests that orange and green light should not be used for growing plants under light. On the other hand, in order to obtain the optimum growth or development of the plant, red and blue lights are more efficient to use. Although the suggested colours of light represents a higher probability of rapid plant growth, it still depends on the type and system of the plant if it will react on the red and blue coloured light.…

    The Scientific Method

I have used the scientific method in my case study to prove my hypothesis, if a plant is grown in light it will grow faster than a plant grown in the dark. To conduct my experiment, you will need lima beans, potting soil, and styrofoam cups. First, put three inches of potting soil into each styrofoam cup. Then plant the lima bean seed about one inch below the surface of the soil. Next add three tablespoons of water to each cup. Put one cup in a window seal or where there will be bright light. Place the other cup in a closet or in a box sealed off from light. Keep a daily diary on how each plant is growing. Each day should be recorded by height, number of leaves, and by the color of the leaves each day. This experiment will probably involve a week to ten days of plant growth.…

    Transpiration Report

The object of this experiment was to study how different environmental conditions affected the rate of transpiration of a plant. The environmental factors we looked at were the affects of various temperatures and different light amounts in the different temperatures. We found that as the temperature warmed up, the rate of transpiration was higher. When the temperature was at five degrees Celsius, the rate of transpiration was very low. When we took out half of the light source and measured the rate of transpiration in the three temperatures we found the same variability of results as earlier where the cold temperature transpired less than the hot temperature but, with less light the overall transpiration rate was less all together.…

Next add two hundred ml of water to each of the three quads, making one the control. Stir each with the scoopula for approximately one minute. After this, place the circular filter paper into each petri dish adding three seeds near the top of each dish. Using one quad for each petri dish only pour a small amount into each dish. This should be enough to dampen the filter paper but not completely soak it. Next, you are going to want to place the lid on each petri dish and using one piece of tape, tape the dish to keep it shut. Then pick up each petri dish and place them into the respective quad that you poured on the seeds earlier. Using the tape again you are going to tape the quads as to hold the petri dishes upright so that the liquid can flow into them appropriately. Next put all the dishes under the same light source so that growth can be stimulated. Finally leave the dish for two weeks and allow the seeds to germinate and grow coming back for measurements. After two weeks the length of each plant will be measured and recorded in…

If I were to test again, I would grow the plants for longer, so that I could gather data for produce. Another hypothesis to be tested is, if I grow a plant outside in regular sunlight, it will grow more than a plant grown under a grow light from 6am to…
