While everyone and everything was chaotic Roosevelt remained calm and said the quote he was most famous for “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Roosevelt continued to calm the country by constructing “fireside chats”, or series of radio talks to bring back the country’s confidence. While doing this he also created the SEC ( securities and exchange commision) to regulate the stock market ( “ The Great Depression”). The Great Depression wasn't the only thing that happened during the 30s. The Dust Bowl had a huge impact on people in the midwest at the time also. The Dust Bowl was drought one after another making the farmers land very dry and not useful. Dust would come in three waves. The first happened in 1934, then again in 1936 and the last lasted from1939 to 1940. Dust would fill in everywhere and it came to Texas and the panhandle of Oklahoma the most. Franklin Roosevelt created the Farmers Mortgage Act which allowed farmers to stay on the land and continue to grow crops for food in our country (“ Catastrophic Dust Storms of the 1930s”). The Fashion was very elegant.
The thirties apparel had a very intelligent look. Women wore dresses a lot back then. Dresses for the day would flow past the knee, almost to the ankles. To go along with their dresses women wore a nice belt to show off their curves or a comfortable coat, usually fur, or both! The heel and the leather bag was what really topped off the sophisticated look (“The Knees Disappear”). Evening dresses were a different story. They would gracefully swoop all the way to your feet so they could make beautiful strokes on the ballroom floor. The dresses needed glitter, the more the better!( “The Knees Disappear”)Women were just starting to grow their hair out with a little curl into it, and needed the hat to pull it off. Everyone wore hats with their attire, usually having it tipped a little more to one side than the other. Women weren't the only ones to have the sophisticated look. While women wore evening gowns, men wore a nice tuxedo to compliment them, and during the day nothing looked better than a silk scarf, briefcase, and a pipe. But what about the times men want to kick back and relax? Men wore rubber soled shoes ( like our tennis shoes) called skokie's, and a cool straw hat called ‘Yippies’ or ‘Jippa Joppas’. Men looked just as well on a regular basis as they did on vacation also! They wore striped t-shirts on the beach and sometimes a silk scarf around the shirts just to make their look a little better.( “The Knees
Disappear”) Due to the stock market crash women often made their own clothes. This was an era of simpler designs to show the simple lives of the public at the time.Because of the Depression magazines showed far far less color a the time of the thirties. (“Fashion History”) Hats were usually accompanied with a bow, flower,or sometimes feathers. The brims of the hat were narrow usually up in the back and down low in the front.Even though the extravagant look was out didn't mean that the ladies couldn't look feminine and beautiful>Some of the dresses had shoulder pads because the broadened shoulders was the look. (“Fashion History”) The thirties didn't have a lot of patterns due to the simpler lives of the public. The people wanted the look to go with how their lives were at the time, simple. It showed that even though everyone was in debt we still have the elegant yet simple look.(“Fashion History’)
Even though the thirties was a time for struggle, we didn't show it through our fashion. The fashion was very graceful but simple at the same time. We showed how strong we were for being strong during the Depression. So,the thirties was a time of downfall but also a time to be thankful of everything we have in life.
