Unconventional, visionary, “ugly chic”; these are all words used to describe the undoubtedly influential Miuccia Prada. Miuccia Prada’s footprint on the fashion industry is both significant and enduring in an industry where trends and designers fade out as quickly as the come in. Although Prada is often noted as the anti-thesis of a typical designer, or the anti-fashionista, her work as a designer and artist influences and inspires both the traditional and untraditional (Miuccia Prada: The Reluctant Fashionista, n.d). Miuccia Prada has created a strong identity for herself as a designer who combines the avant-garde with the ready-to-wear, the ugly with the delicate, luxury without the sex appeal, and a classicism that often embraces outlandish fusions of colors and patterns. She describes her own work as a way to “express, in a simple banal object, a great complexity about women, aesthetics, and current times”(Lovinski, 2010). Even with no formal background or training in design, Prada still creates fashions that are ahead of the times, constantly pushing herself to new limits and often embracing what she even typically dislikes to find beauty in the unordinary.…

During the decade of the 1920s, both men and women’s fashions changed drastically. For women, Flappers became popular and they often set the trends for that decade. Women’s fashion was influenced by other cultures’ clothing and accessories such as Egypt, Japan, and India. The end of WWI ended the rationing of supplies including fabric. The hemline of dresses and skirts for women were getting higher and higher until the average hemline was at about the knee. Some fabric patterns commonly used in the clothes were geometric and often had raised designs like ruffles, bows, fringe, gathers, jewels, and fur for decoration. Along with shorter skirts, the clothing also became less layered and the use of corsets ended. As for women’s hair, the “bobbed” haircut was an edgy choice. Cosmetics started being used in the 1920s; they were used to enhance women’s appearance and were used in moderation. The women’s bathing suit also became much shorter and got a lot of public attention because due to how skimpy they seemed at the time.…

So many ideas flooded my brain that I went out and bought my first sketch book to begin on this fashion journey. I started out drawing a pair of straight leg white dress pants, followed by a beautiful silk pink button up blouse. It was simply stunning. To follow this outfit I would dress it up with a pair of pink pumps and a pair of earrings, it keeps it classy but yet remains stylish. It’s what you call business elegant. The outfit screamed “WEAR ME!” I went to school the next day and showed many people my work and they all said that they were in love. They all wanted me to draw to a design for them to. It shocked me how many people actually liked my work, but I was more than happy to do it.…
