Diana was the goddess of many things. They include the woodlands, hunting, light, the moon, and wild animals. She was usually shown as a virgin hunter, usually with a bow and quiver, accompanied by maidens, deer or hunting dogs. She represented the moon and help women give birth. She was considered to be virginal and pure. However, she could be vengeful, bloodthirsty, arrogant, and unforgiving(Wickersham). Another Roman god was Mars. Mars was a major Roman god. He was second only to Jupiter (the king of the gods and goddesses) in the Roman pantheon. Mars was a more popular and dignified figure than Ares (Mars’s greek counterpart). Mars was originally associated with plants and fertility because of a Roman myth. According to Wickersham, “Juno, the queen of the gods, gave birth to Mars after being touched by a magic plant.”, which is why Mars is associated with plants. Mars became a god of war as the Romans became more warlike. However, he never completely lost his connection with the plant world. Mars was also the father of Remus and Romulus. Romulus eventually founded the city of Rome, so the Romans believed that Romulus’s divine father would help them in times of disaster and crisis.
