Family is something that one is usually proud of, family is a something that is safe, reliable, and stable. In the Weston family it is everything but those things. Twisted, unstable, drama, and a few scandals are only a few words that describe this family. The play August: Osage County brings an unstable family to a whole new level. In the production there is one character who could not get out of her mother’s shadow. Barbara Fordham outfits reflect that she did not get out of her mother’s shadow even though she left the house. In the production Barbara had couple different outfits and some didn’t reflect the fact that she was still bound to the house. They looked like everyday Target outfits you would wear as a teacher. Pants, a shirt and, a jacket is what she showed up in. As soon as Barbara got the news of her father’s death that is when her outfit color showed that she was stuck and never truly left her mother’s house. Her outfits after her funeral dress were all some color of brown. She matched the color of the house and the furniture. She was apart of the house like she had never left. What is strange is that the color brown usually means down to earth, stability, and serious. Barbara out of those three only seemed to be serious. Slowly but surely she started acting more like her mother and dressing like her as well. Barbara at one of the end scenes had a robe on not quite like her mother’s but looked just like her. The color of the robe was a light brown. This was a scene that showed that Barbara was turning into her mother. How she was talking to her mother and sister, and how she was starting to dress was reflecting how much she was bound to the house. These brown outfits were just a brown suit like. It was a jacket, shirt, nice dress, and brown dress shoes. Something that you would get for business for target. It looked like it was scratchy material something a person wouldn’t be comfortable in.
