Fallout Shelter Thesis

One of the most memorable images of the first six chapters of this novel is the skull with the golden tooth, discovered by Brother Francis when he first enters the Fallout Shelter discovered in the ruins. I think this is a very memorable because it is one of the first instances of life (even considering that it is already dead) mentioned in the story. It’s quite hard to get the image of the first noted human skull out of your head. On top of that, the setting created by the Fallout Shelter is already ominous and supernatural. So, the inclusion of the human skull really augments that theme, especially the golden tooth that “flickered when the fire dance high” (Miller 23).
