Falling Angels (chapter journal)
Chapter : Resurrection (1969)

Summary: The chapter opens introducing the main characters on the story; The Family. Mother, Father and their three daughters namely; Lou, Norma, and Sandy. The three girls together with their Dad is going to the funeral of the mother. In front of the funeral, before they enter the doors are the reporters who is waiting for them to ask them about their mother’s death. What the reporters know is that their Mom save a cat and fell of the ground that’s why she died and the daughters answered it with a yes. There also some flashback in the chapter such as, “Yesterday, in their mother’s bedside table, Norma found the kidney stone that he gave their mother—for luck and instead of an engagement ring—on the night they met.” (pg.5)

Comment concisely on any of the items below if pertinent:
Plot analysis: What shape is the plot taking? What is its effect on you? (30-50 words) The shape of the plot is confusing because it has flashback and not so many details of what is happening. There are some flashback presented in the plot and this helps you understand the story more. Lack of some details and flashbacks on the story makes you keep reading the story.
2. Character Analysis: What characters are of interest to you in this chapter? Do you understand why they are acting the way they are (motives)? Can you develop a psychological profile of any of them? Which ones merit your empathy? Why? (50 words) The characters that caught my attention are the three daughters because they all have different personalities and they make the story more interesting to read. I did not understand fully why they are acting the way they are because it is just the first chapter and there is not a lot that is happening yet. Sandy, is the one that I am more interested in because of the line, “…that the better you look, the better people treat you. ““Beauty is only skin deep,” she tells herself defensively.” (pg. 3). I agree with her when she said that because

Many points-of view were incorporated into the story. A continuous element throughout this story is the mystery of the narrator, the character of Kathy, and the evidence provided or presented as hypothesis by numerous characters. The author obscurely states that the reader will not find an answer to the many questions raised throughout the book. “I have tried, of course, to be faithful to the evidence. Yet evidence is not truth. It is only evident. In any case, Kathy Wade is forever missing, and if you require solutions, you will have to look beyond these pages. Or read a different book (O’Brien 30.)” The identity of the narrator is not clearly stated and is written primarily in third person with the exception of footnotes. Eight chapters are devoted to evidence and hypotheses in order to lead the reader to certain negative conclusions. O’Brien states in footnote 132, “Because, on the other hand, there is no accounting for taste. It’s a judgment call. Maybe you hear her screaming. Maybe you see steam rising from the sockets of her eyes (300.)” This type of assertion directly leads the reader to believe there was a negative ending. Yet when looking at the exact language used in this footnote, it remains ambiguous.…

    3. Discuss the four main characters. Who, if any, do you find most sympathetic? Most important, in what way do the events of the novel affect Nick Carraway? How, or to what degree, does he change? (Some see this work as a coming-of-age story.) Consider Nick's father's advice in chapter one: "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." Does telling the story from Nick's point of view make it more believable?…
