Fall of the Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall was more than just a barrier and a physical division of east and West Berlin. It was a symbolic boundary between communism and capitalism that separated many families and friends. Between the years of 1949 and 1961, a steadily rising number of skilled workers, intellectuals, and professionals fled from east to West Germany. In response to this loss, East Germany built a barrier to close off East Germans´ access to West Berlin. That barrier, the Berlin Wall, was began to be built on the night of August 12-13, 1961. When there is any kind of war going on, the entire world hears about it, and has their own feelings towards it. When the fall happened, it marked the end of the cold war, so many, many people were happy as well as predicting a better life and a peaceful world. Also, the fall reunited Germany and foretold the coming collapse of the Soviet Union. Once the wall was down, the families and friends of Germany that had been separated for years finally had gotten to be with one another once again. This moment in history was one certainly one to remember. It may have happened many years ago, but it still has lasting effects on the world today. Closer to when it happened, countries like Poland became allies of the west and established strong ties with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). And yet again it was and still remains one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of the cold war. In simplified terms, the fall of the Berlin Wall marked the end of bad things, and the beginning of good things for many people, organizations, governments, countries, and many more.
