All of his questions led him to finding many answers. His way of thinking made him very different from the others. He noticed things that many others did not. I think he may have been a little bit embarrassed of being an Indian. But through writing and poetry, he began to learn things about himself. He learned that he was in fact an excellent writer and poet.…

Individuals have their own way to express emotions. Writers express sadness and love by writing poetry. “Annabel Lee,” by Edgar Allan Poe, is a lyrical ballad that tells a story of a young couple in love, and how the man responds to the early death of his beloved. The male narrator is also the main character of the poem, which makes this ballad different from the usual ones because, beyond the story, there is also an emotional expression. The poem’s narrator, like Poe himself, is a depressed and angry man who tries to understand the loss of his beloved. Both the narrator and Poe are poor, which is suggested by the poem when the narrator refers to the woman’s relatives as “highborn kinsmen”(line 17). Therefore, the depressed outlook and financial pressure reinforce even more that this poem is not just a ballad, but also an emotional expression of the author.…

Fransisco Baltazar (1788-1862), popularly called Balagtas, is the acknowledged master of traditional Tagalog poetry. His narrative poem, "Florante at Laura," written in sublime Tagalog, is about tyranny in Albanya, but it is also perceived to be about the tyranny in his Filipino homeland.…
Dr. Nandakumar's Bharati in English Verse (1958), the nucleus of the present work, was hailed by Rajaji as "the most beautiful and flawless translation, an exquisite success in a very difficult task." In the present greatly enlarged volume, while the English renderings are at once reliable and readable, the comprehensive biographical and critical Introduction attempts a balanced assessment of the Man and his work, and will help to make them known to an international audience.…
He was my uncle because he married my aunt (even if he had not come to her these past ten years), so when the papers brought the news of his death, I felt that some part of me had died, too.I was boarding then at a big girls' college in Manila and I remember quite vividly that a few other girls were gathered about the lobby of our school, looking very straight and proper since it was seven in the morning and the starch in our long-sleeved uniform had not yet given way. I tried to be brave while I read that my uncle had actually been "the last of a distinct school of Philippine poets." I was still being brave all the way down the lengthy eulogies, until I got to the line which said that he was "the sweetest lyre that ever throbbed with Malayan chords." Something caught at my throat and I let out one sob--the rest merely followed. When the girls hurried over to me to see what had happened, I could only point to the item on the front page with my uncle's picture taken when he was still handsome. Everybody suddenly spoke in a low voice and Ning, who worshipped me, said that I shouldn't be so unhappy because my uncle was now with the other great poets in heaven--at which I really howled in earnest because my uncle had not only deserted poor Aunt Sophia but had also been living with another woman these many years and, most horrible of all, he had probably died in her embrace!Perhaps I received an undue amount of commiseration for the death of the delinquent husband of my aunt, but it wasn't my fault because I never really lied about anything; only, nobody thought to ask me just how close an uncle he was. It wasn't my doing either when, some months after his demise, my poem entitled The Rose Was Not So Fair O Alma Mater was captioned "by the niece of the late beloved Filipino Poet." And that having been printed, I couldn't possibly refuse when I was asked to write on My Uncle--The Poetry of His Life. The article, as printed,…
Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem Annabel Lee in 1849. The poem is about the loss of a love, the loss of his wife Virginia. Poe’s wife died of a disease common in that era, which in fact killed many people, called tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was responsible for the death of about 2,500 people in just three years, from 1885-1887. Poe wrote this poem two years after the death of his beloved wife. In this two year span, many people suggest that he had tried dating in many affairs, and even contemplated remarrying, but he never did. This poem, Annabel Lee expounded on the love he had for his wife, and how he misses her and thinks of her often, and how he remembers the love they had.…
Bharathi worked as a school teacher and as a journal editor at various times in his life. As a Tamil poet he ranked with Ilanko, Thiruvalluvar and Kamban. His writings gave new life to the Tamil language - and to Tamil national consciousness. He involved himself actively in the Indian freedom struggle. It is sometimes said of Bharathi that he was first an Indian and then a Tamil. Perhaps, it would be more correct to say that he was a Tamil and because he was a Tamil he was also an Indian. For him it was not either or but both - it was not possible for him to be one without also being the other.…
