Fair Science Testing With Paper Airplanes
Fair Science Testing With Paper Airplanes

1. Find an airplane template to follow. Design your airplane. Test it with many flights. Practise how to hold and throw it to produce the most consistent straight flight.

2. Decide what aspect of your paper airplane you would like to investigate to see whether it will have an effect on its flight distance. You will need to change it a minimum of three times and will therefore need to build three airplanes.

3. Choose from the following:
Size of paper plane is designed from
Type and mass of paper designed from
Mass on the nose- paperclips or staples
Slits in the wings-number or length
Folds in the wing-width
Holes in the wings or body
Can you think of any other area on your plane that can be varied

What will you be measuring as your results ? They need to be quantitative.

These results will depend on everything else- both your independent variable as well as the control variables, so we therefore call it the dependent variable. So what is your dependent variable?

___________________________________________________________________________

9. Now write up the purpose of your experiment using your independent and dependent variables in your statement. There are two main formats.

To determine the relationship between the (your independent variable) ___________________________________________________________________________

and the (your dependent variable) ___________________________________________________________________________

OR

To determine the effect of ______________________________________________________

on_________________________________________________________________________

10. Why is it important to test the effect of one independent variable at a time?

The rocket I produced was a normal looking rocket compared to the group of rockets I was working with. It was medium size in length and thickness. The head of the rocket was a little wide and lose, and the flaps were not arrow dynamic what so ever. To improve the flight I could have made my rocket shorter and thinner because the smaller the mass the greater acceleration. Doing this would improve the acceleration of the projectile in this case the rocket. Also to improve the acceleration I could add more alka-seltzer to the film case. Doing this would add a greater force to push off of which would make the rocket go higher and faster. Lastly I could have made the structure for the rocket more aerodynamic. To do this I would make the flaps triangles that do not stick out. Doing that will let…

In this project I also became aware of how similar paper planes and real planes are in the design you have to plan for all outside forces including wind, gravity, and the engines (or my hand in the paper planes case.) No matter what the design there's no way to plan for the outside forces involved in this experiment so you'll never get a true result every single time. All of the different aspects of engineering come into this and I was blown away and intrigued at the different dynamics that take place in this…

Perhaps the only joy greater than flying on a beautiful day is when it's in an airplane built with your own hands. What's truly remarkable about homemade aircraft are their great diversity of design. They can take the form of biplanes or ultra lights that aren't much more than a hang glider with a motor and landing gear. Some are as large as commercially built planes while others look and sound like go-carts with wings. They are remarkable because anyone with some mechanical aptitude and a work ethic can build one. Your basic airplane really isn't that complicated a device. You simply need a sound airframe, an engine, propeller, and cables for actuating flight control surfaces from the pilot's cockpit.…

After five exciting years of bonding with my grandfather, as well as painstakingly building and flying model aircraft, there is nothing that I enjoy more than visiting that same flying field. The familiar gravel road to the spacious grassland raises a film of dust, which not only obscures my vision, but is also blown every which way by the wind that unintentionally affects the aircraft. After parking, we struggle to unload the crammed vehicle filled with the covered wooden frames as carefully as possible, being sure not to blemish the delicate airframes that were meticulously assembled.…
