Fahrenheit 451 - Essay questions

Choose one of the following topics and write a five-paragraph essay using at least six examples from the novel (at least four of which need to be direct quotations) to prove your thesis. There should be a clear thesis and topic with specific examples from the book. You also need to explain your examples. It should be evident from your essay that you have read and understood the novel. Any evidence of plagiarism will result in an automatic zero. The essay will be worth 60 points: ideas will be worth 30, organization 10, and conventions worth 20.

1. Write an essay on the importance of knowledge. In your introduction and conclusion, you should also relate what happened in the novel to what is happening today

2. Using Clarisse, Montag, and/or the war to prove your thesis, write an essay defending the necessity to “ask why.”

3. The novel was a warning to society at the time it was written. Write an essay about how the novel can still be used as a warning to people in America today. Hint – be sure to mention what the novel is warning against and how.

4. Write an essay about what begins the changes in Montag and what the changes in him are.

5. Write an essay about the significance to the novel of one of the following quotations.

A. “We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while.” (1,17)

B. “’It is computed that eleven thousand persons have at several times suffered death rather than submit to break their eggs at the smaller end.’” (1,19)

C. “He is no wise man that will quit a certainty for an uncertainty.” (2,6)

D. “. . . that’s the wonderful thing about man; he never gets so discouraged or disgusted that he gives up doing it all over again, because he knows very well it is important and worth the doing.” (3, 9)

E. “The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching. . .” (3,11)
