Fahrenheit 451 Book Report Essay
Fahrenheit 451 is a science fiction novel written by Ray Bradbury in the 1950’s. The book is set somewhere in the United States in the future past the year 1990, as the book states there have been two atomic wars since 1990. Despite it possibly being set in what is modern times today, the story seems to be stuck in the 50’s, with life revolving around television, women being treated as their husband’s property, and advances such as mechanical hounds that administer poison.
The main character in Fahrenheit 451 is a 30-year-old firefighter named Guy Montag. As a fireman in this future, his job is to burn the most illegal item, the printed book, and the houses it is contained in. In the beginning of the story, Montag is a simple, law-abiding citizen who does what society wants. This fire provides him warmth, and it is the first fire he has enjoyed. It turns out that this fire belongs to Granger and his group, who take Montag in, feed him, and tell him about their theory of being able to memorize entire works of literature. Montag travels with them for a while, but one night, Montag has a vision of his wife. Mildred is in a hotel room, watching her television as the city is bombed. In the morning, the city is reduced to rubble, and Montag, Granger, and the rest travel to the city to make a new life for themselves.
I had mixed feeling about the novel Fahrenheit 451. I really enjoyed how imaginative Bradbury was when creating the fictional world for his characters. He did his best converting the original short story into a novel, but some parts could drag and some parts I struggled through. I think this is a good book for any science fiction fan to have in their library. It was difficult for me to finish, but it contains a well-developed plot, characters, and fictional
