Assessment task: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, directed by Chris Columbus, unravels the mystery about a teenage boy Percy Jackson adapting to his newly discovered status as a demi-god (his father Poseidon, god of the sea.) Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more trouble occurs with the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother. Percy embarks on a quest across modern day America; with his newly found friend Annabeth Chase, also a demi- god and his old school friend, Grover (half goat half human.)Their goal is to save Percy's mother, return Zeus' lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods. With the movie starring many Greek god and goddesses relating back to ancient Greek mythology, the movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief appeals to the contemporary audience by modernizing Greek mythology.
The movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief transforms traditional greek mythology into a modern day dilemma. Percy grows up not knowing his father. After meeting him his father leaves him with the words 'I know I'm not the father you always wanted, but if you ever need me, I'll be there for you in your thoughts, in your dreams'. (C.Columbus,2010.) The reason why percy's father is not in his life is because he is the Greek mythological god Poseidon, ruler of the sea. Percy experiences many ups and downs to discover the true identity of his father.
In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, the three gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades are rival brothers fighting to get the lightning bolt back. With Hades wanting the lightning bolt, he kidnaps Percy's mother saying 'Bring me the bolt if you want to see your mother again' (C.Colmbus, 2010.) Hades blackmails Percy into giving him the bolt and threatens he might never see h is mother again. Percy experiences feelings of losing his mother, his closest family member.
In the film Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, elements of traditional Greek mythology are preserved by showing the rivalry of the big three; (Zeus, Poseidon and Hades) that has always existed and also having the ancient Greek god and goddesses.

Disney’s Hercules, while not entirely true to the scripture he was first conceptualized in, is rife with the same heroic traits as his definitive counterpart. Throughout the course of the film, Hercules faces a series of challenges and events which test his strength and ability. Subsequently these events fulfill the majority of his heroic archetype. By Hercules’ masculine nature, divine parent, divine helper, trip to the underworld, and fulfillment of kleos (his immortal quest for glory), Hercules would have been considered a hero in Ancient Greek society despite the archetypical traits left unfulfilled in the film.…
