Fad Diets
It’s the beginning of a new year again and you know what that means! It means it is time to set new goals and resolutions. Majority of Americans resolution is to either make money or lose weight. Changing health statuses or losing weight is probably the biggest resolution every year. It could be that way because there is an epidemic of obesity in America; nearly 65% of the adult population is either obese or overweight (Whyte, Marting, Pennachio, 2005). Americans also have an overabundance of food, which isn’t healthy for that matter. Obesity increases the possibility of or worsen a disease and can eventually lead to death. Because of that, most are going to want a fast and easy diet, turn to magic pills, potions, and supplements which is not the healthy way to go. There are mainly 3 different types of ways someone deals with a new diet resolution; “the shotgun approach (you are going to change everything instantly), the one at a time approach (you focus on one thing that you really, really want to change), and the catch and release approach (throughout the month of January you have made several resolutions but don’t keep any)” (Terhune, 2014). Whatever it is, if it is a fad diet then it doesn’t matter because they are unsafe to effectively lose weight. According to Nicole Avena, Ph.D. people actually gain more weight when on a fad diet (2013). Wait a minute. The purpose of a diet is to lose weight right? It is, but if someone is on a fad diet then they will most likely gain all that weight back eventually. Fad diets are not known to keep their results and are short term only. Commercial diets that advertise the user will lose “x” amount of weight in the “x” amount of time, or any diet that takes out and entire food group is most likely a fad (Avena, 2013). The best way to lose weight is to eat a balanced diet of the right portions and to exercise regularly. Remember that the weight wasn’t gained quickly...
