CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Project Context
As technology grows fast, certain advancements are being developed nowadays and life is getting even better to live with. It makes every task as easy as possible and nothing seems too tiring if human tasks are aided with technology. It can be applied in any aspects of life. Computer technology would be the first on the list that provides great potential for improving effectiveness and efficiency of the information system.
The Short Message Service (SMS) allows the exchange of short messages between a mobile station and the wireless system, and between the wireless system and an external device capable of transmitting and optionally receiving short messages. The external device may be a voice telephone, a data terminal or a short message entry system. As a convenient and low-cost mobile communication technology, SMS is experiencing a very rapid growth. Indeed, Philippines lead the Asia pacific region with the highest number of messages sent per user.
Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT) is where you can find competitive instructors and professors in the fields of Information Technology. IICT Department is a service college for student of Isabela State University, Echague, Isabela. IICT contains a lot of computer laboratories that’s why other students from different college department are performing their laboratory computer subjects in IICT Department. A number of students who took Information Technology, Computer Secretarial, and BS in Information System in the initial year. One of the problems of IICT students and stakeholders is when they have a concern with their instructors, they found it hard to find them, and the waste of time going to IICT dept only to find out that the concern person is not there.
The project intends to provide a technology that allows the students and stakeholders to send a message in the system to locate the instructor(s) of IICT if they are not in the faculty office. The development of the system will also benefit to the students on the other colleges of Isabela State University, Echague Isabela who want to know or to locate their subject instructor(s) in IICT Department to save their time and effort going in IICT.

Purpose and Description of the Project The main purpose of the Windows Based System project is to help students and stakeholders of IICT to be aware of the status and location of their concerned instructor so they don’t need to go to IICT only to find out that their concerned person is not there, the project will going to help the IICT Department to enhance their present Manual Faculty Locator Chart, which uses a Cork board with pins that needs to be put into areas or rooms assignments that they are going every time that they are going to leave the faculty office.

Objectives of the Study
General Objective The design and development of Computer Aided Faculty Locator System with Short Messaging Services (SMS) aims to provide an interface for the students of IICT and students on other colleges including other stakeholders to locate the instructor in just sending a message in the system and they will receive an information reply in a mean time about the location of the instructor that they are looking for, for them to save time and effort. Specific Objectives
Specifically, the project aimed to develop a Computer Aided Faculty Locator System that allows 1. Users to: a. Can LogIn in the system and input their locations. 2. Administrators to: a. Update (Add, Edit, Delete, Save) different faculty profile information on the system b. Manage user account to allow access to the system c. Can print the attendance monitoring of the IICT faculty.

Scope and Limitation of the Project The proposed Computer Aided Faculty Locator with Short Messaging Service (SMS) is a network system that is design to provide information regarding the location of the instructor(s) to the students, officials, staff and everyone that is concern. The scope of the study is to develop a system where the stakeholders use for monitoring their subject instructor(s) in IICT. The students can send SMS in the system to locate where their instructor is, if they are on leave, absent, on the other department, and where their room locations and laboratory in IICT. The system is consisting of modules of administrator who is responsible in updating the database, a module of clients where they can even update their profile location.
This proposed system enables the student to save time, money and effort by just typing in at their mobile phone the (KEYWORD) ID number of their concerned instructors. Furthermore, these system provides a convenient way of inquiring their instructors with just press and send way. The system is available only during office hours. The study will produce text reply for the students that correspond to their query or concern. The develop system does not require General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) connection or any mobile browsing all transactions are in form of text message only. The student/stakeholders can only sends the SMS to the system and the system will reply the answer back to the sender as an SMS also.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter focuses on the review of related literatures and studies. Review of related literature support the validity of research in terms of relevance to the existing research.
Related Literature
Many staff and students rely on mobile computing devices for work and personal uses. Laptop computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), USB memory (aka thumb drives), smart phones (mobile phones with advanced communication, storage and processing capabilities). They bring a lot of convenience and ease of use. SMS text messaging is the most widely used data application in the world, with 2.4 billion active users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers. (www.studymode.com)
Short Messaging Service (SMS)
Text messaging was first developed in 1991 for GSM digital mobile phones, almost by accident (Baron, Patterson, and Harris, 2006). SMS was the triumph of the consumer - every generation needs a technology that it can adopt as its own to communicate with - and the text generation took up SMS. The fact that the entry barriers to learning the service were so high were an advantage because it meant that parents and teachers and other adult authority figures were unlikely, unable and unwilling to use the service. SMS is one of the few services in consumer history that has grown very fast without corresponding decreases in pricing (www.in.mobile.yahoo.com). Although SMS suffers a limitation from the 160 character text-only format, innovations such as the ability to send barcodes improve opportunities for coupons, point-of-sale redemption, and ticket purchases (Trappey III & Woodside, 2005) have opened opportunities for marketing via mobile phone.
Related Studies The use of mobile phone in this operation will result in a significant cost and time saving as well as the user would benefit from being able to use familiar gadget. SMS-based is a mechanism that delivers short messages over mobile network. Basically, SMS consists of two main components which are SME (Short Message Entities) and SMSC (Short Message Service Center). SME is a mobile phone software application which provides store-and-forward methods. The SMS-transferring process can be described in Figure 1 (Bodic, 2005). Step (1), a short message consisted of no longer than 160 English characters or 70 Thai characters is delivered from the mobile phone by the forward method of SME. These characters can be text (alphanumeric) or binary non-text-messages. Step (2), each message, sent from the mobile phone, is stored in SMSC (Short Message Service Center) which then forwards it to SME of the recipient mobile phone in step (3). After that, the delivery report will be sent to SMSC, which then sends submission report to the originator SME. In the case where the destination mobile is not available, the message is stored and sent later. Figure 1: Message Transfer between two SMS
SMS can be classified into two main categories which are per-to-peer messaging and valued-added services. In peer-to-peer messaging, SMS transmission originates from one mobile phone sending messages to another mobile phone. The transmission process is handled by Short Message Service Center (SMSC). On the other hand in value-added services, SMS transmission occurs between mobile phone applications. The value-added services are handled by SMS gateway operators and services providers. Bulk SMS is the system that helps us bring messages in bulk multiple users at in one sending, which equivalent to multiple sending at one time. Similar to email, bulk SMS is an entity web-based application of messaging platform; however, bulk SMS offers a better solution to distribute information instantly to multiple cellular users using complex computer devices.
Baron et al. (2006) indicated the need of further research into the importance of text messaging as a social and cultural practice in everyday lives, with emphases on addictive behaviours, learning and the development of repertoires of communication skills by increasingly sophisticated consumers, and feelings of exclusion by non-participants through qualitative research approach that reflect upon consumer text message (short message service – SMS) behaviour.
Nysveen et al. (2005) combine various theoretical fields (Information system research, Uses and gratification research; and Domestication research) and indicated that marketing managers should be aware of motivational variables, such as perceived expressiveness, perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use, in addition to consumers’ attitude toward use , normative pressure, and behavioural control for future research.

CHAPTER III
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND In this chapter the technicality of the project by which it describes the type of the project to be developed and its functionality. It also represents the type of application development of the project.
Technicality of the Project

Figure2. Framework of the Project
The diagram shows the different components of the framework. Each component functioned distinctively within the framework. The following components are stated below with their specific functions: 1. Admin/Faculty. The faculty can input their profile and their locations before leaving the faculty office. The data will be saved in the database. 2. Database: The database acts as the backend or the repository of all the information. All information from the user is stored in the database file. It organizes the information sent and received by the user. 3. Server - In information technology, a server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs (and their users) in the same or other computers. omputer that a server program runs in is also frequently referred to as a server (though it may be used for other purposes as well). 4. SMS Modem – modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone. From the mobile operator perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a mobile phone. 5. Network - A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs), exchange files, or allow electronic communications. The computers on a network may be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams. 6. Student/Stakeholder: The students or stakeholder use their mobile phone to send the keyword SMS message in the system. And can receive a response (data) from the system about their queries.

Detail of the Technology to be Used The researchers will use the following technologies during the development phase of the system. * SQLYog - the researchers will MySQL to create a database. The researchers choose MySQL because it is an open source software and it has the features that use a very fast thread-based memory allocation, and it is relational (RDBMS) that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases.Visual Basic.Net * Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET) - is an Object-Oriented Computer programming language that can be viewed as an evolution of the classic Visual Basic (VB), implemented on the .NET Framework. * Cellular phone - A portable telephone that uses wireless cellular technology to send and receive phone signals. This technology works by dividing the earth into small regions called cells. Within each cell the wireless telephone signal goes over its assigned bandwidth to cell tower, which relays the signal to a telephone switching network, connecting the user to the desired party. * Broadband - stands for "broad bandwidth." It is a connection that uses multiple data channels to increase bandwidth, which is the amount of data that can be transferred in a given time period. Broadband, high-bandwidth Internet connections are used to get faster downloads and uploads. Dial-up service, conversely, is a low-bandwidth, narrow-band connection.
How the project will work?
The proposed system will be windows based system as interface for the administrator, students and the clients in modifying the data in the database. The administrator will have the authority to modify records in the database if the client/the faculty staff are absent or in other businesses. Client can be able to log in and log out and input their locations in the system before they leave the faculty office. A SMS server will also be provided as interface for the students and their IT instructor(s). CHAPTER IV METHODOLOGY
The proposed study will be using the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) using Rapid Application Development (RAD). RAD is a methodology for compressing the analysis, design, build, and test phases into a series of short, iterative development cycles.
Operational Feasibility
Fishbone Diagram One of the most effective method to track the root cause or problem of the agency or at the area were the study were taken which is the school, fishbone method is being used because researcher can determine what problems are going to solve when the system is being implemented. The diagram below shows what are the data gathered by the researchers. It shows the cause effect of the current system of the school.

Figure 3. Fishbone Diagram

Functional Decomposition Diagram FDD is a diagram that shows the breakdown structure in smallest component of the system that the researchers going to develop after the studying the data that are gathered in feasibility and planning phase. This will help track the functionalities of the system and let you know the features that can are being added into the system. This diagram shows all the process of the system. It will help the researchers on creating DFD because it is similar to context diagram that all process are being displayed in one diagram. Step-by-step procedures can be applied in the system as the diagram shows the flow of the process, in this way; user can easily understand the process of the system.

Telecommunications Systems – in banking, when clients must be alerted of certain activities, they are sent an SMS via the internet. It may be that they are advising the client of a new product, or that the internet banking facilities will be unavailable on a certain between certain hours. As texts are sent and received in what's considered real time, there will be a 90% chance of the clients reading the message right away, as opposed to receiving a letter in the post or by email. SMS can also be used to send short surveys to clients requesting feedback about a recent call or service. At no cost to client, most of the surveys are completed as they are not as personal as a phone call. In any event, sending and SMS over the internet is not time consuming and very cost effective.…

The term SMS is another term for Short Message Service. It refers to the means of written communication by means of a mobile phone. Text messaging allows mobile users to communicate privately without being heard by others. Sending an SMS messages is also a lot faster than composing e-mails. In addition it is very convenient because one does not need a computer, unlike instant messaging and e-mailing. Another advantage of text messaging is that whenever a text message is sent to a mobile phone, the message is stored in the SMSC. This means that even if the mobile phone is off or is unavailable, the message will still be received soon as the mobile phone is turned on or has a signal. Text messages can also be saved in the SIM card as long as it is not…

The idea of a point-to-point short message service (or SMS) began to be discussed as part of the development of the Global System for Mobile Communications network in the mid-1980s, but it wasn't until the early 90s that phone companies started to develop its commercial possibilities. Text communicated by pagers were replaced by text messages, at first only 20 characters in length. It took five years or more before numbers of users started to build up. The average number of texts per GSM customer in 1995 was 0.4 per month; by the end of 2000 it was still only 35.…
