The Facilitator The Facilitator trait is possessed by a principal who is highly effective due to a skill set they have acquired in building relationships with students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders. This principal has the ability to create a community of leaders, which encompasses an entire school through collaboration. Christy Johnston exhibits strengths and weaknesses comparative to the facilitator trait in her leadership as principal of Southaven Elementary. Mrs. Johnston is leading a kindergarten through fifth grade campus of over 800 students with approximately 55 certified staff and about 35 support staff. In a role as a facilitator, she strives to tap into the potential of people. She relinquishes control often, and delegates the responsibility of decision making to others in leadership roles. The phrase “people don’t change for leaders they don’t like” reflects the current turnover rate at Southaven Elementary. Christy Johnston has not developed a strong mission and vision for Southaven Elementary School; therefore, teachers and students lack commitment, due to lack of guidance. She is not in every classroom, everyday. Many of the teacher’s observations were pushed aside until the last days of school, which left them feeling as if their feedback was distorted. Emotional bank accounts were not consistently filled throughout the building, which has led to negativity and resentment. Diversity of multiple intelligences and strengths is not celebrated, and most teachers and staff feel that they are not able to voice their opinions for fear they will not be listened to, or valued. Mrs. Johnston does not know or spend time with the students of Southaven Elementary. She does not know any individuals on a personal level unless they are a major discipline

    The first model that we will look at is the direct instruction model. This model may be used in many different subjects and areas. According to one of the articles, direct instruction is an explicit, scientifically based model of effective instruction, which was developed in the 1960’s by a man named Siegfried Engelmann (Adams & Engelmann, 1996). The idea behind direct instruction is to get more accomplished in less time. The one way that this can be down is by controlling the environment and how the material is taught. It is believed that within this model it is the teachers’ fault if the students did not learn, not the student’s fault for not learning what was taught. The model starts by teaching with the big idea in mind. Then the teacher needs to make sure that he or she is communicating clearly.
