Facilitating Field Assessment
I recently completed a math assessment on three students from my facilitating field placement location. I used the math assessment located on Sakai resources. The assessment assessed the students on their ability to rote count, number recognition, number word after, number word before, and counting objects. The following week I decided and planned activities that would best suit two of these students to help provide understanding in areas where they lacked it. I didn’t know exactly where my students stood on the trajectory of because of their ability to do things higher than just emergent counting but I suppose Student A is a perceptual counter and Student B is maybe a figurative counter. However, Student B lacked the ability to count backwards but she could identify the number of objects blocked (Van De Walle, 2013). Each day was a new activity but most of the activities pertained to the same concepts. After each day I reflected on how the two students did on the activity and what I should do on the following day.
On the first day the activity I did was to help me gain more understanding of where my students were. Both of them struggled and switched numbers around when counting backwards. This could’ve been a flaw in the assessment; it

I felt like this would retouch on the student’s understandings and see if the students made any progress. However, my plan didn’t go as I intended it to go. Student A was absent so as a result Student B and I only did the activity Jokes on You. She loved this game. We played together. I got the joker first and she helped me without me even having to ask her. However, there was sometimes where she got confused and she would count up instead of backwards but then she would catch herself and correct it.     Two of the assessment activities that I use are Worksheets (or written questions) and photographic evidence. These assessment activities are the most commonly found within my level 1 group. Worksheets within my area are a very versatile way of collecting information from the student, they can contain short answer questions, multiple choice questions etc. Worksheets are extremely valid because they are usually created by the awarding body of that qualification or by the teachers who have read through what the learners need to achieve. Because it is a direct way of assessing, the learners will not “go off task” as the worksheets are designed to be short, sharp ways of assessing that require the learner to answer two or three questions about a particular criteria. Ideally, the learner should be assessed on different occasions, and by different people on each criteria, so that this assessment becomes more reliable. Once the learner has answered these questions to show their understanding, and have had the criteria explained to them, they would have passed that one element within their criteria, therefore making it even more sufficient, fair and reliable. Worksheets are very easy to differentiate depending on the level of learners/ course/ certain individuals. If you have someone in your class who is dyslexic then you can differentiate a worksheet into more picture based learning where possible and also if you have someone who excels in lessons you can differentiate the worksheets to enable more information from the learner. The fact that this can be done so easily makes it fair. A question of authenticity can be raised with worksheets because answers can be very easily duplicated within the classroom, however, it is up to the teacher to recognise that this is happening and stop it.…

    On Junior Achievement Day, my partner, Tayler J. Deggendorfer, and I taught one of the second grade class. We had five lessons to teach in total, and we divided up evenly.
