FMAT: A Case Study
nterested in the F-MAT:
Spoke to Dr. Tello, a local family physician, about what he does as a family physician. After the conversation, I wanted to do what he was doing. To become a person who gets to provide long-term care to the individual and the family while building a long trusting relationship with them. The F-MAT will specifically allow me to become a physician in a reasonable time allowing me to impact my community sooner.

Interested in Practicing in an underserved area:
While shadowing Dr. Dario Narro, a neurologist, I asked him why he established his medical practice in the Rio Grande Valley and not in a big city like Houston, he replied "It's not about the money but rather the people". This inspired me to follow his footsteps

The reason this student chose the family care clinic attached to the main hospital is due to the recent change in positions the student has made to the Family Medicine Residency Program. The knowledge this student is learning about the process for moving a family medicine clinic has lent a new appreciation for the process involved in only one small aspect of the entire planning, building, and moving process. The new floor plan that is at St. Anthony North Hospital is the inspiration for this student’s floor plan. This floor plan is part of the hospital yet functions as a separate office area from the hospital. This student’s thought behind an attached family medicine clinic to the hospital is that the hospital will be able to utilize the clinic as an urgent care option instead of overwhelming the emergency department with non-emergent patients. The clinic supports the hospital and the hospital supports the clinic with the cross flow of patients between departments.…

I have been a nurse for 14 years, mostly in the Emergency Department, and have become aware of the growing population and the need for Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP’s). According to Walden’s University Catalog (DEC. 2013a), FNP’s are defined as “advanced practice registered nurses with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage health issues in patients of all age groups, from birth through senior years.” My goal as a FNP is to provide advanced health…

I feel that with my knowledge and understanding of this course, I would be an excellent candidate for the position of Medical Coder at North Bay Medical Hospital. A year ago, my mother was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. She passed away the following year. As I went through her medical bills, I found numerous billing errors. I was understandably upset during this time. I contacted her doctor’s office and spoke with Betty. She was the most understanding and reliable person I had ever dealt with. After she resolved all of my issues, I thought “that’s the kind of work I want to do. I enrolled in Penn Foster and excelled in my Medical Billing and Coding course. I also feel that my mother would be very proud of me.…

It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in the past eight months at Fortis Institute. It’s just so hard to believe that less than two weeks we will be done with my education. I must admit I will miss spending my time here. But most of all I will never forget the experience I received as an Intern Medical Assistant working with Patients.
Making a difference in someone’s life just fascinates me, knowing that I have the power to help someone. Working at North Belt Medical Clinic as a Medical Assistant intern is one of the greatest life experience. I will not trade it in for any other work field. Becoming an assistant also supplies knowledge of the most intimate interactions of the natural processes, giving a glimpse of processes that are not easy to understand. At this Center the patients are Diabetes related. As I spend more time as an intern at this Clinic I was inspired by Dr. Willie Harrison who helped and gave hope to many of these people, had myself raise some questions on the concepts and wonder what it would be like to be a part of the North Belt Medical team or somewhat relate to this field. I believe that Medical Assistant program classes at Fortis Institute help gave me an opportunity to pursue my passion for helping those with medical problems and let me feel at ease on the first hand training at the North Belt Medical Clinic. At the North Belt Medical Clinic I learn to Answering phones and making appointments ordering supplies, greeting patients, pulling and filing patient charts, calling in or faxing prescriptions, converting charts to electronic charting. Hopefully I can take these skills I learn and better myself in life.…

Nurses share the joys, pains, and triumphs of their patients. Everyday nurses show-up for duty, receive their patients, and without hesitation begin to become a valued member of an extended family. I initially went to school with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. At the time, I believed becoming a doctor was the only way I could ultimately give back to my community through my passion for science. The decision to pursue the field of advanced nursing, developed after sharing my concerns about healthcare in the Mississippi Delta with my local family nurse practitioner.…

It provides me with a great school, and a beneficial work experience. I have learned the ups and downs of working part time, and attending school full time. My dream to become a doctor is not my dream, but the dream of my entire community. The necessity of me giving back to my community is utmost important, which is why I am a strong advocate for community service. Having done over 350 hours of service, I have learned from professional doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital events, and passed on my knowledge as a mentor and tutor to the struggling students at my school. I also take charge in school events, because being a leader is what allows a person to adapt and help others more efficiently. I am the President of the California Scholarship Federation, and have been the Vice-President of the school’s biggest community service club, Pacific Club. The ability to help people and provide for my community is an opportunity that I cannot pass…

I was raised in the small town of Hidalgo, Texas, just on the side of the Mexican Border. Living there made me grow up thinking that possibilities were limited and there was not much offered to us. Although, along the years, I realized that this town did not define me , and it actually made me strong enough to take on life elsewhere in the future . I remember being in this town ten years ago, and there was only local businesses . The town has grown along with me, and it has opened up opportunities to its community and myself.…

My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…

Family members would often call me with questions regarding their health. During my Internship as part of medical school, a 50-year-old presented to the clinic with numbness of his legs. His initial lab works showed increased blood sugar levels and increased hba1c levels and after doing an EKG I was able to confirm that he had suffered from a silent Myocardial Infarction. He was later started on appropriate treatment and when I met him later for outpatient follow-up, the whole family reported to be indebted to me for diagnosing a hidden problem. This really overwhelmed me and made me realize the kind of satisfaction I was able to provide a family by being an Internist. This also proved me that I had the thought process to untie the complexity involved and come up with a broad differential diagnosis. Taking up challenges is one of my attributes and I feel an Internist faces unique Intellectual challenges on a daily basis. From my experience, I can say that even a small change in someone’s life will make a difference, like when I was talking to my Aunt who is a diabetic, was complaining of muscle pain and after diagnosing her condition as medication-induced, I witnessed how peaceful she was after eliminating the…
