Wal-Mart 's Strategic Initiative It is difficult to clearly understand the goals of a company unless you look at the strategic planning involved. What is strategic planning? Strategic planning is simplifying the overall purpose and desired results of an organization, and showing how those results will be achieved. If the strategic plan is properly prepared and understood, then the company will continue to grow and thrive. They want to make sure that the products that they sell to their consumers are safe to eat and that with our busy lives they want the products to stand the wear and tear. With the help of the safer and stronger merchandise, Wal-Mart is planning on increasing sales and make sure that they are making the importance of their values known. With this said from the annual report, Wal-Mart is also working with Michelle Obama to make their food products healthier and their produce cheaper. (www.nytimes.com) Mrs. Obama is helping to reduce obesity in children and trying to make foods healthier. Wal-Mart has been meeting with the first lady and are going to take their brand, Great Value, and make it to where it has less fats, sugars, and unhealthy salts. They are going to come out with healthier soups, salad dressings, rice and snacks. Wal-Mart is also trying to get Kraft to follow their examples and produces healthier …show more content…
For Wal-Mart, three initiatives have been identified. The first is purchasing supplies from a responsible supplier. The second is to produce healthier food products in conjunction with the support of Michelle Obama. The third is to promote cheaper produce which will encourage families to eat healthier. The identified associated risks are the possibility of limited resources from so-called responsible suppliers causing Wal-Mart to limit goods that they sell. In addition, there is the possibility of higher cost associated with responsible supplier which will then be trickled down to consumers. Lastly, there is definite risk of botulism or reduced sales associated with purchasing lower quality produce in order to meet their initiative of cheaper

This represents a 21 percent reduction from our 2007 baseline. In Chine in 2010 reduced the waste by 84percent using 2007 as a baseline. Wal-Mart wants to stay on top globally where economics is concerned as well as employment, zero waste, lowest prices and the list goes on. Wal-Mart has three basic beliefs within their company: Respect for the individual, Service to their customers and Striving for Excellence. In October 2010 Wal-Mart announced an acceleration of their global commitment to sustainable agriculture. By doing this they are matching farmers with markets, reducing food waste while motivating farmers to supply their chain.     Wal-Mart is the largest US retailer. Company’s decision to implement the business sustainability strategy to become “the most competitive and innovative company in the wolrd” should have a huge impact; since not only the company will become sustainable, but 60,000+ suppliers would b forced to implement sustainability. Wal-Mart is deriving business value from this not from generating news sales and creating profit, but by improving brand image and creating customers’ good will. For the successful implementation of the new strategy, Wal-Mart divided products into three categories: electronics, seafood, and textiles. Key element for the implementation of sustainability was not to create new jobs to do it, but to make it a part of every existing job. Among three networks, in my opinion, the most successful was textile network. This network made a major organizational change by redesigning its buyer role. The function was divided into four different job categories: merchandising, product development, technical services and sourcing, and planning and execution. These helped Wal-Mart to “ask better questions and become smarter merchants.” Major innovation in textile industry was an implementation of organic cotton.
