Everybody has heard about the five senses; sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. But some people believe that they have a sixth sense which is known as the extra sensory perception (ESP). “Scientists and anthropologists agree that ancient humans had much more highly developed sensory perception than we do.” (Browne 22) It is a very controversial issue but according to repeatedly polls show that about half of Americans believe in extra sensory perception due to everyday incidences. “For example, many people have found themselves thinking about a friend or relative only to have that person call on the phone moments later.” (Kallen 10) Some say it’s coincidental while others believe it has to do with the sixth sense. ESP is a very debatable subject and consists of telepathy, clairvoyance, remote viewing and precognition. Although scientifically nobody has proven that ESP is a true ability, believers just go with their gut instincts and hunches since it is a very difficult subject to prove.
There are two types of telepathy, one where a person can send / receive thoughts from another or spontaneously. “In such cases the telepath would be struck suddenly by mental pictures or words from an agent who was unaware of sending the thoughts” (Kallen 18) Telepathy was originated from the Greek words tele which means distance while pathe means experience, which is why telepathy interprets into distant experience. Researchers found out telepathy most often occur when a tragic has happened or when close relationships or twins are involved. It happens a lot through everyday life, when two people are with each other constantly they begin to think and say similar things. As well as their physical features could get rubbed off with each other. “Identical twins obviously share the closest

A popular and thorough explanation for brain and visual functioning, perception, and sensation is known as ‘Gestalt Theory.’ Gestalt theory explains that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Individual parts alone cannot conclude to be as great or effective as the whole entirely. This is important to recognize because a better understanding of why and how the world is viewed as a whole picture can be related to real world instances. Such as in motion pictures and in flipbooks, which helps to differentiate between perceiving apparent motion and actual, real motion. For instance, we involuntarily blink our eyes everyday, and although this is an action of real motion, apparent motion plays its part by filling in the blanks of blackness or darkness when blinking occurs. Furthermore, the theory then can translate to: the whole experience of sensation and perception is greater than the sum of individual parts of sensation and perception. The theories of Gestalt help to explain extraordinary circumstances and phenomena’s of perception that are experienced in life, whether that may be visual or auditory…

Experiences we encounter every day would make us believe the accuracy of our sensory perception. At Shoppers Food Warehouse during the holiday season, I saw a man who kept staring at me. He looked familiar but I couldn’t place his face. A while later while we were checking out, he said to me “You don’t remember who I am, do you?” I apologized for not knowing his name, even though I had said hi to him. He then told me his name and after that I remembered him being the brother of a friend of mine. The reason I did not recognize him at first as the fact that he was…

In psychology, sensation and perception are stages of processing of the senses in human and animal systems, such as vision, auditory, vestibular, and pain senses. These topics are considered part of psychology, and not anatomy or physiology, because processes in the brain so greatly affect the perception of a stimulus. Included in this topic is the study of illusions such as motion after effect, color constancy, auditory illusions, and depth perception.…

Stanford University began to study extrasensory perception (also known as the sixth sense) from 1972 to the 1980s. Duke University studies ESP and psychokinesis (the ability to move objects with your mind) from 1967 to the present day. Princeton University worked with ESP and telekinesis (similar to psychokinesis) from 1997 to 2007. Harvard University set out to disprove ESP from 1990s to 2008, but could not get any solid evidence. The University of Virginia studies reincarnation and near death experiences…
