A. Introduction

World War Two was considered as the golden age of propaganda. Both the allies and the German side were producing propaganda films weekly, even using cartoons to manipulate children into buying war bonds. The American society at that time was aimed at keeping the war efforts strong even though people were not overseas fighting with the army, but to what extent did the propaganda movies during World War Two affect the American Society? The German propaganda films focused more on the way to show that Jews were bad people, while American propaganda films focused on the distribution of war bonds and the mockery of the fascist leaders in war. There are also Japanese propaganda films that showed that they were willing to die for their motherland. Allied countries wanted to demote the idea of Nazism in their country, so with the help of propaganda films, they mocked the fascist leaders. Propaganda films are used very frequently in this technologically enhanced world. The propaganda films used during the war are still shown in classrooms and many of the German films were banned, unless used for classes. The effects of WWII propaganda films led to a majority of American representatives using propaganda films to heighten their campaigns. From presidents to senators, the use of propaganda has elevated from World War Two. Without the age of propaganda, we would not see any other propaganda films today.

B. Body Paragraphs

I. American Society
American society in the 1940’s was hectic, all the men were at war and all the women were working the men’s jobs. It was a time of war and because of the war unemployment went down and women and colored people were now replacing the men. American society also flourished in the matter of patriotism as they saw that the US was eventually going to join the war in Europe.

At this point in time the modern television set was introduced to the family with the addition of radio and newspaper. Americans wanted to know what was happening in the war. Since there were now television advertisements, this allowed the ministry of war to send out public announcements regarding the war; this was also the way men were recruited. The advancement in television and film technology enhanced the change in the use of propaganda. Although the television was temporarily decommissioned to regain materials for the war, the business of advertisements was still alive.

American society was also very patriotic. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American’s went into the war making a statement that they wanted revenge on the Japanese. To show their patriotism they created propaganda posters for recruitment with the iconic “Uncle Sam Needs You” slogan. (Refer to Appendix A.) The Americans wanted to bring back victory for the democratic nations, so with the use of propaganda films they involved the entire nation.

Although the American's were patriotic, American society also had some struggles with their supplies at the home front. They had to rationalize their food, petrol and other essential everyday items. "I saw one of the country's eight thousand ration boards at work. This particular board which has jurisdiction over sugar, gas, new tires and the recapping of old ones." (Gil Reporting WWII) Everything was rationed at this point, but the war efforts kept on rising, and the fact the people wanted the war to be over allowed them to watch propaganda films in order to give some support to the men fighting out in Europe.

II. "American films
American society also affected how American films were made. During World War Two the American’s had not been in the war till the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Second World War was considered as the pioneering age of American propaganda, propaganda films of all sorts were released weekly.
