Grass Fed Vs. Corn Fed We live in a fast paced world where today many excuses such as, “I do not have time to cook” or “I am too tired to cook,” are used to not prepare our own meals and to refer to fast food restaurants instead. Between school, work, and friends, who has the actually time to sit down and enjoy a healthy, hearty meal? In recent years, there has been many positive and negative views towards grass fed and corn fed cattle. While both may seem to have their own pros and cons; ranging from beneficial nutrients, to cost efficiency, both contribute to the ecosystem but in their own ways. The key point here is that many Americans do not realize that there is even a difference between the two. There is the grass fed cattle, where the cattle is fed in natural ways we consider beneficial for our health and where corn is substituted that could cause health problems. There are many reasons as to why people choose to support grass fed beef. For starters, grass fed cattle live in a better environment. They eat grass, roam in pasture fields, and mind their own business. These cows are also feeding on what they were born to eat, which means grass feeders are healthier. Hands full of people also believe that grass fed cattle provide a richer, lean, and less fatty taste, compared to corn fed cattle. Not only is the quality of taste is different, but also “ grass fed meats will supply 100% of your body’s nutrient requirements in a perfect balance” (DiGiesuppe). An animal’s diet can deeply influence the nutrient contents of its product. In comparison between grass and corn fed beef, statistics have shown that “omega 3s in beef that feed on grass is 7% of that total fat content, compared to 1% in corn fed beef” (Mercola). Grass fed beef is also loaded with other natural minerals, vitamins, and health benefits. Meat from a grass fed cattle has about one-half to one-third as much fat as comparable cut from a corn fed cattle. Lower in calories,

The top 5 meat industries controlled 25% of the market back in 1970, and now that number has risen to an outstanding 80% of the market (“100 Days of Real Food”). The current industrial approach to livestock has birthed an issue pertaining to the sustainability and healthy feeding of our lives. Yet there is another problem in relation to our consumption, which tends to be overlooked. If the pricing of meat reflected in the damage done to our environments, feedlot beef would cost more than grass-fed beef both financially and environmentally.
