TDA 3.3 Describe with examples how transitions may affect children and young people’s behaviour and development.
Transition is a term given to periods of change which children or young people undergo as they progress through different periods of their lives. Transitions are crucial for children to grow and for future development. There are transitions which affect every child’s development and transitions which are personal to only some children.
Many transitions are conventional and expected changes, which affect all children as they develop through to adulthood. These changes can explained to children in advance and children can then have the opportunity to question why these changes are happening to them. The new baby will receive lots of attention, the child will feel jealously towards the new baby, as the child does not now have the sole focus and attention of the adult. The child will strive to gain the adults attention, this may take the form of uncharacteristic behaviour. It is how the adult deals with this new behaviour that will affect the child’s development. Negative parenting will result in the child resenting the new sibling. Positive parenting will eventually smooth the transition of the new sibling into the family unit.
Relocation to another country or moving house will cause anxiety for any child. They will worry about the loss of their friends and how they will make new friends. Also they will have the worry of a new school and possibly a new language to learn. Social development will be affected by their anxiety during this period. Behaviour is very likely to be affected, since they will trying to express their feelings. Outbursts of temper, crying and tearfulness combined with unreasonable behaviour are all likely ways of a child not being able to express how they feel during this
