As Coronado was searching for the city of gold he visited many different areas. There are two ways that Coronado could have visited these places. One way is that the Indian tribe that the Spanish were “staying” at, would tell them about a land of riches further up north. This was told to get rid of the Spanish people. Which caused the Spanish people to keep on traveling to the north, discovering different areas of New Mexico, Colorado, and maybe even Texas. While at one of the Pueblos Coronado sent some of his men to explore the Colorado River, which led them to the Grand Canyon. They were searching for an all water route to California. When that group came back emptied handed kept on moving. When he encountered the Zuni tribe with a Plains Indian captive, the Plains Indian captive told the Spaniards that he knew of a land of riches to the east, where his tribe lived. So with new hopes the Spanish followed him, only to find nothing. With their hopes dispared the Spanish turned back towards Mexico City. With this expedition they traveled to parts of what is now today New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Coronado may not have found the cities of gold, but the route that he traveled is now better known as the Santa Fe Trail.…

The people of this island called themselves Arawak, and were known for their generosity. Columbus wrote of them in his diary "They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword and they took it by the edge, cutting themselves out of ignorance…they would make fine servants…with fifty men, we could subjugate them all, and make them do whatever we want (Churchill 3)." This would be a continuing trend in the thoughts and behavior of Columbus in particular, and Spanish explorers in General. Columbus later noticed that many of the Arawaks wore bits of gold in their ear lobes as jewelry. This led Columbus to take a number of natives captive to show him the source of the gold. After being led to streams and rivers with gold particles in the water, Columbus sailed to modern day Haiti and the Dominican Republic presumably with dreams of lands flooded with riches. Here, the cruelty of the Spanish explorer would be made dreadfully…

compartment into another. When the iceberg ripped a hole in the side of the ship, the compartments began to fill with water. As five of the compartments filled with water, enough air was pushed out of the ship to lower the front end (the bow) deep into the sea. Water continued to pour over the top of the compartments that where filled with water into those that were still full of air. 5 compartments were filled. The more the Titanic sank, the more water poured into the air- filled compartments and the heavier the vessel became. Eventually, air was forced out of the hull so that the whole ship became heavier than the water around it and consequently the Titanic sank. This is one of the main reasons why the titanic sank, (oblivious to the fact that it crashed into an iceberg.) Although crashing against the iceberg made a gash in the ship, the speed of the ship was too fast to be traveling in dangerous waters. The ship was traveling at about 21 knots. When Columbus reached land in the Bahamas he was greeted by the Arawak’s who were without clothing. They greeted Columbus and his men with gifts of food and water. Columbus instantly knew that he and his men could subjugate them and make them do whatever they want. The Arawak’s were remarkable for their hospitality and their beliefs in sharing which, were not present in the Europeans. The reasoning for Columbus’ voyage to the Americas was because Spain was expanding incredibly fast and it came to a point where 2% of the population owned 95% of the land. The Spaniards sought gold because it was more useful than land for it could buy anything. There was thought to be gold in Asia along with other goods such as silks and spices and a Western sea route was needed. Spain decided to take the risk and send their men across an unknown ocean. Columbus was promised 10% of what was found along with governorship over newfound lands and fame. Columbus was a merchant’s clerk from the Italian city of Genoa. He was an expert sailor and set out with three ships. The Santa Maria was the largest at the time. It was 100ft long and contained 39 crewmembers. Columbus miscalculated and ended up thousands of miles farther than he had calculated. On October 12, a man named Rodrigo saw the first bits of land and shouted out. They had landed on an island in the Bahamas. Supposedly the first person to see land was entitled to a yearly 10,000 maravedis for life. Rodrigo never got it because Columbus had claimed he had seen a light the evening before so Columbus then got the reward. On the island Columbus and his men had made a fort out of the timbers from the Santa Maria. This was the first European base in the Western Hemisphere. The Arawak Indians had developed crops such as corn, yams, and cassava they could spin and weave but had no domesticated work animals. The Indians wore tiny gold ornaments in their ears, which led Columbus to take them as…

Questionable events arose after the sinking because the only evidence about that night was the stories told by the few survivors. It was known that on April 10th 1912, the Titanic set sail on her first voyage from Southampton. On April 14th at 11:40 p.m. the ship struck an iceberg on her starboard side of the bow. On April 15th at 2:20 a.m., the Titanic 's broken off stern sank into the sea (Amy 2). For many people, it was hard to believe that the largest ship ever built had sunk on its maiden voyage. Since it was thought that Titanic could stay afloat with even the hardest of impacts it was hard to imagine that the Titanic went down just because of an iceberg that scratched her bow. Therefore, the world was shocked the morning of April 15th when news broke out that Titanic had gone down in less than three hours. A recently uncovered family secret has revealed new information as to why the Titanic sank so rapidly. Today, the Titanic lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in two pieces and a big debris field surrounding two square miles. The shipwreck site is one of the deepest places on Earth to be explored and has brought us new knowledge about the tragic events of April 15thas well as biological processes currently occurring…
