Eligibility is determined by means of a test.Contact your local draft board for more information.” “One suitcase is it,” Father explained to me, “the rest goes to waste. Oh, and don’t forget this” he handed me a tiny piece of paper folded neatly into four small squares “these are the names of the train stations that will get you across the border to Canada. Can’t wait to see you! Dead 1951 Fear and anxiety possessed Mike Nelson as he sat in a local bakery shop reading the journal entry excerpts in the newspaper. The “Anonymous Draft Dodger” made television news headlines. He was the first draft dodger to ever receive such media coverage. The people of New York City were invested, and state-funded searches were to be conducted to catch the infamous author of the twelve journal entries. Questions circulated throughout New York City: How were the journal entries discovered? Who else escaped with the anonymous author and where did they reside during the war? What information do the other ten missing entries entail? Was the writer a secret ally of the Axis powers? Mike knew he was soon to be caught—with television becoming a commonality in the suburban household, the city was becoming heavily invested in the case and taking initiative to find the anonymous draft dodger. Soon, the New York Police Department would discover, charge, and arrest him. His handwriting severely disadvantaged him, as its distinguishable sloppiness could potentially expose him as an anonymous author and prohibit his career as a sports
