The Equality Act 2010 was put in place to group together over 116 pieces of legislation in order to prevent discrimination, harassment and victimization and to promote equality for all. There are new protected characteristics to prevent discrimination on the grounds of: age, being or becoming a transsexual person, being married or in a civil partnership, being pregnant or having a child, disability, race (including colour), nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, belief or lack of religion/belief, sex and sexual orientation.
I adhere to these laws by treating everyone equally and ensuring that no one is at a disadvantage. If I feel that a student is disrupting lessons because they have a learning difficulty, which has not been addressed, I will refer them to ALS for assessment. They may receive extra help in or out of class. They may have access to voice activated software, note-takers, readers, scribes or extra exam time. A hearing impaired student should be given the same equal opportunity. This could mean providing a communicator and note-taker. Stairs should not restrict a wheelchair user. Allowances should be made for mental health issues. For example, one of my students is on strong medication and may be hyperactive at times and drowsy on other occasions. Allowances are made for this. If he needs to take a break to calm down, I allow this. Sometimes he needs to sit by an open window. He has extra in-class support to meet his needs.
